Re: "Tao and Zen," er, "Now and Then." The tune reminds me of "Cheese and Onions," a song by The Rutles, with Neil Innes portraying the faux John Lennon, viz. "Ron Nasty."

Please, Yoko, no more uncompleted John Lennon songs. The only thing you were ever good for was being a perennial crossword puzzle clue.

I agree. Paul can do whatever he wants because of who he is and what he's
done, but the rest of us don't have to call them Beatles songs. And I
shan't.

Oh, I don't know. I've heard two 30 second bits of it and do like it. A lot.. It sounds a whole lot more like The Beatles than did "Free As a Bird" and "Real Love." Those two seemed more like ELO, although I liked both recordings as well. Of course, I'll have a much more informed opinion tomorrow morning.

The only thing I'm not happy with is the price. Naturally, the target market is collectors and, perhaps, Christmas shoppers. The thing is, there are a LOAD of us who have been fans since the first Sullivan appearance. At our advanced age, there are probably a lot of us who can't justify paying so much for so little. I don't know who or at what level chose to make the price as high as it is, but they should be ashamed.

Being a Beatles nut from the beginning, I've got it ordered in several formats and will no doubt get it on CD since it was announced as an option today. I'm sure that was a trick that someone had planned quite some time ago. Due to the pricing, I've talked with a couple of friends who are choosing to "wait" for the inevitable CD release.

See what I mean? I had a very successful, yet a little under the radar career and am willing to shell out the ridiculous prices they are getting, but not everyone can do that. I'm quite sure that Mr. Lennon would sincerely object to this marketing of his song. Remember that this is the band that tried to leave singles off the albums so that people didn't have to buy a song twice.

Just download it from a torrent, or have your kids do it for you if you
don't know how. Then buy the CD later.

The Beatles have enough money and you shouldn't have to buy the same
song over and over.

Any of y'all offhand know what ABC and NBC ran against The Beatles historic three-week Sullivan Show residency*? Did either register more than an A.C.. Nielsen blip?

With only two competing shows against The Beatles--PBS-predecessor NET [National Educational Television] wasn't a significant factor back then--I'm curious as to how ABC and NBC counter-programmed. Or did the other two just ran their usual sitcom-or-western thing?

I wouldn't know, as like so many of the estimated-70 million Americans glued to the tube that first-of-three Sunday nights, there was no channel-surfing from CBS that hour. I watched it in a sizable party of seven or so neighborhood kids, all decidedly older than me, but it was decidedly not a party, just a modest suburban St. Louis gathering. But a FOCUSSED one. I typically watched the often-corny but always culturally-interesting Sullivan variety show alone, so this was an especially unusual experience for me; I thank my late brother for congregating a bunch of his half-a-decade-older neighborhood pals into the fully-furnished basement, the kids' half of our huge ranch house.

One of our black-and-white portable sets--my four-member family had eight TVs scattered around our house in 1964, a television-age family ahead of the curve--was for that night perched on our ping-pong table. (The following two Sundays, I would watch solo on my bedroom's set.) Wouldn't have mattered even we'd all been watching on a state-of-the-art color set, as CBS was still more than a year away from color.

Don't we all miss the years prior to the Lennon assassination? Sorry for the self-indulgent musings here, but I'm afraid I still find 1964 Beatles more interesting than the 2023 Beatles, even on monochrome television rather than digitally-tinkered 16-track audio.

BRYAN STYBLE/Florida
==================* A theatre residency of a SORT, at least: the opening night was indeed aired live, a two-set premier performance that inexplicably included as only the SECOND screams-drowned song (following opener "All My Loving") a Meredith Willson tune from The Music Man, "'Til There Was You". Still, all this was, I gather, only aired live from New York to the Eastern and Central time zones; the West Coast had to watch on three-hour delay. Then a week later on February 16th, their second two-set performance was also aired live live, but it was a remote from The Deuville hotel down in Miami Beach (from its low-slung south-annex and owned by a Sullivan pal, the modern-style beachfront landmark razed only last year to limited Florida media coverage. And then their third, final two-set performance on February 23rd wasn't even aired, er, remotely live...as it was in fact a tape recorded at the future Ed Sullivan Theatre two weeks prior during that first weekend, an afternoon dress rehearsal in front of a different audience than appeared in hysterics that glorious February 9th. (Brian Epstein already had the four lads back in the U.K. by the time it aired on the 23rd of that Leap Year February.)

Feb 9 1964:
ABC The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters; Arrest and Trial
NBC Disney (The Scarecrow, Pt. 1); Grindl

Feb 16 1964:
ABC The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters; Arrest and Trial
NBC Disney (The Scarecrow, Pt. 2); Grindl

Feb 23 1964:
ABC The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters; Arrest and Trial
NBC Disney (The Scarecrow, Pt. 3); Grindl

The Scarecrow put Patrick McGoohan on the U.S. map.

McPheeters was about Dan O'Herlihy and Kurt Russell heading west on a
wagon train.

Grindl was an Imogene Coca sitcom about a wacky maid.

Arrest and Trial was very much like Law & Order. The first half of an
episode was about the cops busting a criminal, the second half was
about the trial. It starred Chuck Connors.

Filmed for and aired on American TV as "The Scarecrow of
Romney Marsh", it was edited and retitled for British
theatrical release as "Dr Syn, Alias The Scarecrow".
While it was the first major U.S. television exposure
for McGoohan--already established as one of the leading
actors in Britain--it didn't really garner him much
recognition; that would come the next year when his
"Danger Man" series (retitled "Secret Agent" for the
U.S.) started airing regularly on CBS (which had aired
some episodes in 1961 as summer filler). Meantime, at
about the same time he had filmed "Scarecrow", he also
filmed "The Three Lives for Thomasina" for Disney, which
was released theatrically in NYC in December 1963 and
nationally in June 1964 and would later air in three
parts on "The Wonderful World of Disney" as "Scarecrow"
had. It was directed by Don Chaffey, who also directed
15 "Danger Man" episodes and later 4 episodes of the
greatest TV series ever made, McGoohan's "The Prisoner".

I did not watch it live (not yet born). Television itself was fairly new (only half of American households had a TV in 1955). I suppose many kids watched Beatlemania clips on TV. But it is absolutely mind-blowing and to this day rather unprecedented for such mania to be generated for a musical group that had never stepped foot in America.

50,000 fans at Shea Stadium. Unheard of for a single act. Just absolutely shattering records for a rock concert audience till that time.

Many factors contributed to this including: musical talent, marketing and promotion genius, Americans longing for something new in the wake of the JFK assasination... But that type of event will likely never be seen again.

I was there the second year and I'm not sure that it was quite sold out. I still couldn't hear much of anything. It was shortly after John's "bigger than Jesus" thing, which probably had an impact on ticket sales.

Grindl is the only one I remember but I wasn't aware whether or not it
was on Sunday nights. I remember it primarily because when I was in
the third grade a girl sitting across from me was erasing something on
her paper. Her eraser happened to play out a little tune which
sounded like the theme song to Grindl. There was a boy sitting behind
her who recognized it too.
