Today, if I wish (I don't), I can watch the following films on the
This didn't just start today: it's been like
that at least since beginning of November. When do you start
celebrating Christmas?

Not at all.
I'm not a Paulite, nor a follower of Yeshua(or even John the
Baptist)'s dunking cult.

Some people I'd met in Olden Times (70's 80s), used to spend the month (or
maybe less, back then) in e.g. Morocco.

Our local media are having fun with that, noting that our Christmas
celebrations don't really get going until after Thanksgiving (which
is this Thursday), but you don't have a November holiday whose own
celebrations occupy November (after those for Hallowe'en).

On December 23rd, but for me it's okay to start Christmas 'actions' in
December. Very few people in Denmark wait that long. The shops begin
selling Christmas stuff and decorating in November or sooner. That
spoils my Christmas mood.

Even worse is it that people set up LED-chains and LED-stuff in huge
quantities. Some take pride in having their electricity meter running
redhot (except that they are computer controlled nowadays, but you get
my drift). That has also been going on since november, and they keep
them till well into February (or longer?).

My 'celebration' consists of every second year getting together with my
children and grandchildren. When there are children present, I enjoy
having a Christmas tree and presents. Every second year the
grandchildren are with their fathers (both my daughters are divorced),
so I spend the Christmas alone which I don't mind. I may set up a few
Chistmas items in my house, and I may not. It's not important to me. I
may choose to visit my family instead (father, sisters and brother) if I
don't want to be alone.

Depends on what you mean by 'celebrate'.

My wife is half Ukrainian, half Romanian, so We have family dinners on
Christmas eve (traditionally 12 meatless dishes), and on Christmas day.
Other than that, I put up an LED strip programmed with an Arduino, with
a bunch of different patterns, randomly shuffled. I do it because I like
the effect, and the Christmas season is the only time I can put it up
without everyone thinking I'm an idiot.

Other than that, it's just another day for me.

Hasn't happened yet.

The first Christmas display I saw in a store this year was in October.
Toward the end, I think.

When it gets dark on Christmas Eve. That's when Father Christmas comes
and the children are kept out of the way until they hear his
sleigh-bells, signifying he's lit the candles on the tree and left the
presents, and they can come back and just be too late to have seen him.

The decorations start going up earlier in the day.

It is traditional in the US for some radio stations to switch to an
"all Christmas" format shortly after Hallowe'en.[1] They used to have
the decency to wait until after Thanksgiving,[2] but it is
inexplicably very profitable if you're the only station in the market
doing it, so over the past three decades it's been creeping earlier
and earlier in the year. I went into a local home-improvement
warehouse store and saw the Christmas goods already in the front of
the store in September.[3]

-GAWollman

[1] Usually it's the adult-contemporary statons that do this, for whom
it's much less of a break in format than a rock or country-hits
station. Sometimes stations will do Christmas music when "stunting",
basically trying to drive away listeners from an old format before
introducing a new one after the holidays while also goosing the
ratings.

[2] Fourth Thursday in November, this year that's next Thursday.

[3] Retailers have largely gone to a "just in time" inventory
management system, but Christmas products are manufactured year-round
because the demand peak exceeds instantaneous manufacturing capacity.
This means that someone has to pay to store all the stuff if it
doesn't go right out on the sales floor,[4] and since there are no
significant shopping events between back-to-school and Christmas, that
means fake trees, lights, baubles, wrapping paper, etc., often get
hauled out right after Labor Day to reduce the cost of warehousing.

[4] There are retailers whose selling proposition is trading in
holiday inventory out-of-season, when it's cheap. Historically,
retailers would go out of business at the end of the year, and when
their unsold inventory was liquidated, saleable items would be bought
up at auction by buyers for these stores.

Are you sure these are not the warming-up acts to those mindless
talk-shows on French TV at Christmas?

When do you start celebrating Christmas?

The day after. Boxing Day, [tra-la-la].

Yes, France has become a cultural colony of the USA.
Btw, there are advantages to having 'Sinterklaas'.
It limits the christmas misery to 20 days.

Christmas Day. The tree goes up last thing on Christmas Eve.

Supermarkets here start Christmas in mid-August. It seems earlier each
year. It's not full-on until after October 31st, because until then they
are promoting masses of plastic tat for Hallowe'en. Sainsburys will be
playing awful and too-loud Christmas music in their stores for the whole
of December.

A more reasonable marker for the start of the season, oddly, seems to be
the appearance of TV adverts for Famous Grouse whisky.

It's not quite as bad as that here, but certainly the madness has
already started. For me, though, the true sign that Christmas has
arrived is the appearance of Easter eggs and hot cross buns in the
supermarkets.

Lately I've been receiving a lot of e-mail advertising about Black
Friday. In Australian tradition, Black Friday means a major disaster in
1939 when bushfires almost wiped out an entire state. It continues to
mean a disaster in my mind.

Not to be confused with Bloody Friday, a particularly bad day (in 1972)
during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Christmas Eve for us, if speaking of festivities. Actions such as
putting our dibs on a turkey have to happen in advance, of course.

Yes - and for perfumes. Not that I see many ads. I record programmes and
skip through the ad breaks.

Nah, perfume ads (aren't they called fragrances now?) have been running
on TV for some weeks already. The ads for large expensive toys have
started, too. FG was always notable because they don't run TV ads at all
except at Christmas, and those ads start only rather late in December.

Does Danish, like English, have an association where "black" usually
denotes something evil?

Yes, and those associations are still there, but they have been softened
by "[something] is the new black". A couple of years ago I followed the
house market around Aarhus where I live, and black is a very popular
color for kitchens and other places. I don't like it.

Danish expressions where black is bad - words translated to English:

black conscience, black work (moonlight work), black money,
go in black means that you can't remember a thing - typically on stage
or at an examination. When we had to pay tv license , a black-watcher
was someone who didn't pay his license.

I think that seeing black as something bad is international, but I don't
know that many cultures. Darkness can be seen as something threatening.

It reminds me of this interview with Muhammad Ali. He is brilliant.

That's crazy. In 1955 I was at a boarding school in which we were
arranged in groups of four or five boys of different ages to share a
study, which could be decorated with posters, etc. (but not pictures of
naked ladies, which would have been grossly shocking in 1955). There
was a general election in the UK that year, and the local Labour Party
had a poster that was black with red lettering. It was very striking,
and although I wasn't a Labour supporter at that time I put in up in
our study. It was only when I took it down at the end of term that I
realized how much light it had been absorbing, making the room much
darker than it ought to have been.

Not that anyone cares except me, but I got my years mixed up. It was
1959, not 1955.

Have you seen "Le Père Noël est une Ordure" (on screen or on stage)?
It wears a bit off with every repeat, but I still enjoy its caustic humour.

My daughter considers Christmas starts when the Coca-Cola "the holidays

The big news in France at the moment is that the price of Coca Cola
will increase. The war in Gaza pales into insignificance by comparison.
