I got an email from Walmart this morning:
---------------------------------------------------------------
We had to reschedule your pickup

Hi William,

Due to an unexpected issue affecting store operations, we had to
reschedule order 2000111-33185574 (my grocery pickup order) to Fri,
Sep 1, 3pm-4pm. We know this is a frustrating experience, and we're
very sorry.
--------------------------------------------------
OK, I can handle that, because I fortunately have no other commitments
and I'm not going to run out of bread, but is there some reason they
couldn't soften the inconvenience and tell me what the "unexpected
issue" is? Is it because "there is an ongoing investigation" into the
"issue"? Is it because discussion of it "would compromise national
security"? Maybe because unfettered knowledge of it would be a threat
to democracy? Because it might instill unnecessary fear and anxiety
into my life, and literally uniquely possibly create even more fear
and angst when I discovered that there were no open seats left in the
available safe spaces within a statistically reasonable driving
distance? What?

Would any of you experts on anything on the table like to expertly
speculate on this possibly unique event in the relatively contemporary
passage of time? At the end of the day going forward, I allege that it
would be foolish of you to not take advantage of this opportunity to
pontificate, condescend, and denigrate. I mean, look, you know, it
could be, like, hours - even days - before such a fertile opportunity
for bullshabble as this occurs again.

Probably some issue that would be embarrassing to Walmart, and they'd rather not discuss it with nosey civilians? A local business has that kind of a problem on its hands, here in SLOCO....

In a San Luis Obispo woman's gym, a member discovered a hidden camera in the restroom... The P.O'd. member wanted to notify the police, but the gym owner vociferously tried to discourage her from doing so... It was only a temporary solution for the owner... Instead, the irate member snitched to the local newspaper, who called up the gym owner, and was told "No Comment"! Now, the police are also "on the case", and lots of folks are wondering, why the gym wasn't "transparent" about the incident... It has got the public channeling their inner Sherlock Holmes... HawHawHaw!

Perhaps there is a similar mystery going on, down in your Walmart?

The most likely issue is that they can't hire enough bodies for what they want to pay. Online orders are a major priority for Walmart. Management likes to schedule as many of these orders as they think the store can handle. The people who can handle the pace of online orders get paid a bit better than the average Walmartian. For what they get paid a lot of people don't give a shit. Absenteeism is a major problem for Walmart. Many stores have a problem with people deciding that didn't feel like hustling groceries today. The Walmart stores here have frequently hired temp workers and closed their deli section to keep up with the work. They just plain move a lot of stuff. I've seen the local store with the aisles full of groceries on pallets because they didn't have enough bodies to put everything on the shelves or anywhere left to put the groceries. They didn't move your stuff quite as fast as they had hoped. It happens.

Walmartian?! You should be ashamed, you xenophobe, you.

Well, harrumph. I think it's because they caught someone spitting in
the plastic bags.

And note that the passage of time is significant, and I placed the
order Tue for pickup Thur afternoon. I got the possibly unique email
at 5:30 am Wed morning.

So there’s the answer. The hidden camera in the “women’s” restroom wasn’t
working. The employees were too busy trying to get it working to be
bothered with your insignificant order.

Xenophobe? Hardly. At one time I was sleeping with a Walmartian, who, as far as I know, coined the term. And it fits. They even have their own language. For example, when you place an online order the individual items are know as "picks". Scheduling is determined by the number of picks. Wlamartians are given pick lists and sent out to different departments to fill them. Every store has an assigned goal based on that metric.. If necessary they will pull people from other departments to meet those goals. Just about everyone ends up working on online orders at one time or another. Department managers usually end up doing it as a regular part of their job. District managers have even been known to pitch in on rare occasion.

Naturally, there are all sorts of possible reasons for your delay. It could be that their AI system simply doesn't like you.

Well, hell. If they're using an AI, that'll explain just about
anything - it'll screw up whether it likes me or not. At the end of
the day going forward, I allege that my first-hand experiences with
AIs strongly suggests that they're, like, you know, almost as dumb as
Democrats.

Note: In order for me to sorta be with the times and not stand out as
a rural redneck at a higher metric than I already do, add the
literally annoying Valley Girl inflection to the word(s) at the end of
my sentences. And since that topic is now on the table, I allege that
we need a novel punctuation mark - rather than using the "?" off label
- to indicate the employment of that VGI in the written word. Maybe a
new key on the keyboard to give something like this ┘
But curving with an arrowhead on top?
