Linguists should be interested in Donald Trump's finding that migrants
are bringing languages into our country that "nobody" has heard of.

Trump claims that migrants are entering the country speaking "truly
foreign languages" and that "Nobody speaks them".

It might be harsh to castigate Trump for his inability to speak English.
But his core audience seem to like what(ever) he is saying.

I beg your pardon, because I know that you're a US citizen, but what's
your comment to the stark possibility that almost 50% of the people in
your (insult censored) country vote for him and your not so slightly
flawed electoral system lets such a fuckwit be elected?

Just as a joke, about languages nobody speaks, what if I talked to T. in
his grandpa's mother tongue, still spoken by about 100,000,000 people?

Trump received 46.9 percent of the Americans who voted in 2020. That
is far less than "almost 50%" of Americans. Only 66.8% of the
eligible voters actually voted.

I take your point, though. Why even that number voted for Trump is
something I don't understand.

Let's hope he doesn't pull a Trudeau and get elected for a second term.

Some people interpret politics as a struggle between the right wing, who
support the rich and those who would like to be rich, and the left wing,
who support the poor. But that's an oversimplification, and anyway those
groups somehow cancel each other out in voting power.

The real battle, in most countries, is the race to win the stupid vote,
because the stupid people hold the balance of power.

I fear he will. Helped, in large part, by their electoral system which
is dysfunctional.

The interesting quote from that article says:

"The U.S. has no official language." That explains Trump-speak.

No, of course not. But I bet that Peter Moylan knows more Gaelic than
the orange loser does.

Now now Peter.

Trump never ceases to amuse us, but he could turn out less
amusing. Fortunately, not very likely.

In almost every case, those who favor Trump are a % of those who do
NOT have a higher education, very often rural and Southern.
In cities, there is a larger % of college graduates who favor
Democrats and Biden.

And that, I believe, is not a small part of the problem:
Not understanding the other side.

(I don't get it either, but I have very limited means of investigating.
I'd very much like to understand.)

I don't want to pretend that I am awfully clever, but to a certain
degree I understand a bit of what's happened. Very roughly:

The world is crumbling before our very eyes, and the traditional
politician preach more of the same. That makes people afraid - even if
they are educated, by the way. The latter group just have other means of
expressing themselves and a certain faith in the system, or they have
simply given up.

The result is more drastic in the USA because they have a two-party
system. A system with many parties allows many groups to be politically
represented who wouldn't feel comfortable neither with Democrats nor
traditional Republicans.

Another oversimplification, because there are a lot of middle-class and
above who favor Trump ... even flying flags in places like Huntington
Beach.

I think Bertel has a good part of the handle in grip, but I'd add that
those who favor Trump tend to think of the left as threatenng to take
something from them ... guns, the ability to farm, and the ability to
make money hand over fist without worrying about consequences.

Does Trump think that far back? He may only think ahead in terms of
revenge; I'm reminded of Sir Richard Branson's account of a meeting
with the The Donald who wanted some muscle in a grievance.
