OED has
natter (v) 'to chatter; to chat aimlessly, idly, or at length' (1942-)
natter (n) [as in the above quote] 'a chat; an informal talk' (1943-)

before that
natter (v) 'to grumble, complain, nag' (Sc. and Eng. regional) (1804-)
(n) 'grumbling, nagging talk' (1866-)
(g)natter (v) 'to gnaw, nibble' (1747-)

Thanks for that cite as 1942 seemed relatively recent for a simple word
that sounds like chatter or banter. It's not a word I've heard in the US.
