Here's a simple question I bet you can readily answer, Louis, and I'm guessing without research:

As Head of State/Monarch/TopBanana of the sovereign state of The Vatican, does Pope Francis have the power to pardon this conviction, or any serious criminal conviction for that matter?*

Oh, and does the sovereign state of The Vatican have a constitution? That is, either a conventional (written) one, or at least an unwritten one (such of which is understood to be in place in the U.K.) ?

* You'll recall there was a murder in Vatican City a couple of decades ago or so, by some priest or other cleric upset about some personal matter with one of his low-level colleagues; can't recall other details.

So the never-gonna-be-Pope Cardinal is going off to prison, eh? We'll see if the convicted Cardinal ends up spending even a day behind bars.

But that of course raises the question: where would he do his time? I'm guessing jurisdictional concerns would prevent it from being the Supermax in Colorado. Presumably, surrounding Italy has an extradition-like treaty with The Vatican to fork over and ultimately incarcerate the occasional inside-tiny-Vatican crimes, I'd imagine.

It certainly WON'T be in The Vatican itself, as even IF they've got a lockup there--and they OUGHTA, because I bet that less-than-a-square-mile sovereign territory is a magnet for espionage--it's more akin to Mayberry's Otis-residential jail than to San Quentin.

Seriously, I suspect this thing will end up with him under house arrest in the same apartment he's already in, only with several Swiss Guards outside his door. And that would be a spectacle, 'cause those guys sure know how to dress.

There are documents called "apostolic constitutions" that decree
how certain governmental or ecclesiastical institutions are to
be organized and administered forevermore...
but all of them can be rewritten by whoever is pope at any time.
