I guess I didn't read the reports of the Thursday, January 4th middle-school rampage in Iowa closely enough; I was under the false impression that courageous and heroic principal Marburger was not too seriously wounded and thus on his way to recovery.

So now the "gunkid" has posthumously tallied a body count of two [and also himself, of course, but it's flat-out outrageous when press accounts include the shooter in their total, doncha agree?], plus however many wounded survivors there are.

I'm pretty sure I (more or less) understand why young persons--or for that matter, us oldsters, and middle-aged folk as well--become suicidal in this increasingly wretched century. But I cannot fathom what makes them want to also take acquaintances (much less strangers!) with them.

(I presumed that--though no excuse for zoning out on your headline, Lenona--because it was a 9th grader who was the first one to die, and I'm still of the mentality that 9th grade is part of the old junior high school classification (which of course in turn became middle schools by the 1970s.)

Incompetent press accounts do that. As someone who's had to write up
too damn many of these shootings, I was always careful to make it clear
that the gunman had killed himself or if the cops had done it. I also
didn't include the dead gunman in the overall toll.

They do so because they want the coverage. What they don't appreciate
is that these things just don't get the kind of coverage they used to.
They've become too routine. There's also the worry that coverage will
spur other potential shooters to do the same.

I once laid off an ongoing hostage story on the radio because the cops
asked me to. They said the hostage holder wasn't happy with what he
was hearing. I said fine, as long as you talk to us when the thing is
over. It all worked out.
