It's great to know that we Floridians can look up what the late, veteran Sunshine State pol ate for breakfast every day, not to mention which rental videotapes he was considerate enough to rewind prior to return.

Historians lost when diaries went out of style.

Well stated, W.C.!

Many historians interviewed on C-SPAN's [exclusively-nonfiction] Book TV also lament that the 21st Century wholesale shift to e-mail from handwritten correspondence.

Happen to be reading Walter Isaacson's exquisite biography of Benjamin Franklin just now, and indeed Franklin's many surviving letters allow a fascinating peek into the Founding Father's 18th Century mindset in a way his public--and even many of his private--actions don't allow. (Franklin is also known to destroyed much of his other copious correspondence, though, and G-d only knows what THOSE missive might have revealed, especially given his much-discussed amorous predilections.)
