You can put them in in late April, but they won't start growing until
the soil warms up. Generally, buying plants at Lowe's/Home
Depot/Menard's will only get you fruit a week or two sooner. The reason
I'm starting seedlings inside instead of direct sowing is that I'm using
pricey seeds. If I were using the 10/$1 packets from Menard's, I'd just
sow them where they'll end up anyway.

I buried the frozen mash of tomatoes in October. They went soft after a freeze so no use picking them. We'll see if any seeds sprout.

If the tomatoes were reasonably ripe, it is *very* likely that you will
have plenty of volunteers. I have an area with cherry tomatoes that
comes back every year.
