These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2023-05-15,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Bloor St. Irregulars and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
please see my 2023-05-24 companion posting on "Questions from the
Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 2, Round 7 - Geography - Island Capital Cities

We give you the capital city, you tell us the island nation.
(The nation will be entirely on one or more islands, but will not
necessarily own the whole of the island or islands. For example,
we might say "Dublin", but we won't). All countries are UN members.

1. Dili.
2. Suva.
3. Nicosia.
4. Victoria.
5. Castries.
6. Valletta.
7. Basseterre.
8. Antananarivo.
9. Port of Spain.
10. Bandar Seri Begawan.

* Game 2, Round 8 - History - Weapons of the Russo-Ukrainian War

Except as indicated, name the weapon described. Be specific where
applicable; for example, "Colt .45", not "Colt". If you are correct
and more specific than required, your answer will be accepted.

1. The Russian air force was unable to establish early air
superiority in part thanks to this man-portable air-defense
system.

2. This portable anti-tank missile was a key factor in stopping
the Russian advance on Kyiv.

3. This term derived from words meaning "heat" and "weight"
refers to a destructive type of weapon that's also known as
a "vacuum bomb".

4. The 2023 Victory Parade in Moscow was widely mocked because
the only tank on parade was this model, the mainstay of the
Soviet Army in World War II. This one hasn't actually been
used in the Ukraine war -- not yet, anyway.

5. Considerably newer than the <answer 4> is this German-made main
battle tank, which NATO members (including Canada) are donating
to Ukraine. Name and number, please.

6. The bulk of the tanks provided by NATO are <name from answer 5>s.
However, the US is also providing 31 of its own main battle tank,
and the UK is providing 14 British-made tanks. Name *either*
of these models.

7. One military system the Ukrainians have not been receiving
(although not for want of asking) is this multi-role fighter
produced by the United States.

8. In the absence of the <answer 7>, the Ukrainian Air Force has
had to rely on this Soviet-era relic. They have received spare
parts and planes from the arsenals of several former Warsaw
Pact nations.

9. The Ukrainians have been using Turkish-made Bayraktars as
well as commercial and home-made models; the Russians have been
using Iranian-made Shaheds. These all come within what class
of military technology?

10. This specific medium-range mobile rocket system is widely
credited with enabling Ukraine's 2022 counter-offensive.

It is expected that if the war lasts long enough they will get
them eventually. See:

I haven't seen anything in my readings about Stingers in this current
war, but have encountered the term MANPADS. So I figured the latter term
was a new, better type of air defense system. I mean the name looks like
a typical US DoD acronym.

Turns out that MANPADS is just a generic term for many kinds of portable
air defense systems made by a variety of countries.

"MAN-Portable Air Defense System", I suppose, then.

But, of course, you were asked to "be specific where applicable".
