What's the adverb in German?

Short (adverb) meaning --- Abruptly, curtly, briefly.

They had to stop short to avoid hitting the dog in the street.

He cut me short repeatedly in the meeting.

The boss got a message and cut the meeting short.

Seeing the flames erupt from the window, the firefighter stopped short,
momentarily stunned by the intensity of the blaze.

„kurz“, cognate with ‘curt’.

Your listed examples ‘stop short,’ ‘cut short’ are phrasal verbs that don’t
carry across easily to German.

thanks!

They had to stop short to avoid hitting the dog in the street.

He cut me short repeatedly in the meeting.

The boss got a message and cut the meeting short.

Seeing the flames erupt from the window, the firefighter stopped short, momentarily stunned by the intensity of the blaze.

Der Chef bekam eine Nachricht und brach die Sitzung ab. (to break off). (abbrechen?)

Als der Feuerwehrmann die Flammen aus dem Fenster schlagen sah, blieb er wie angewurzelt stehen , kurzzeitig überwältigt von der Intensität des Feuers.

i guess i'm curious if German has an expression corresponding to [stop short] -- almost like a calque.
