These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2023-07-10,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Bloor St. Irregulars and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
please see my 2023-05-24 companion posting on "Questions from the
Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

** Game 8, Round 9 - Canadiana Geography - Canadian City Nicknames

In each case, name the city or town being described. (Province not
required.)

1. What town has the nickname "The Polar Bear Capital of the World"?
It also lays claim to being the "Beluga Capital of the World".

2. Name *either* of the two British Columbia cities that have the
nickname "Salmon Capital of the World".

3. What city has the nickname "Birthplace of Confederation"?

4. What Atlantic Canada city has the nickname "Canada's Original
City", as it was the first city incorporated in what is now
Canada, in 1785? Other nicknames include "Port City" and
"Fundy City".

5. What city has the nickname "Steeltown"?

6. What city has the nickname "Bytown"? A less official nickname
used by the locals is "the City that Fun Forgot".

7. What city's abundance of bridges has led to it being nicknamed
"The Bridge City" and "Paris of the Prairies"? A further
nickname is "POW City" for the abundance of Potash, Oil,
and Wheat.

8. What Alberta city's abundant natural-gas resources have led
to the nicknames "The Gas City", "The City with Energy", and
"The City with All Hell for a Basement", the last of which is
based on a description of the city by a visiting Rudyard Kipling?

9. What Ontario city has the nickname "Bell City" and "The
Telephone City"?

10. What city has the nickname "Cowtown", originally ascribed
due to the abundance of good cattle farming and not because of
a popular annual event and its attendees.

** Game 8, Round 10 - Challenge Round - Color My World

All of the answers will be color-related in some way.

* A. Entertainment

A1. Name the R&B group that released the song "I Wanna Sex You
Up" in 1991, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

A2. Name *either* the rock band that won a Grammy for their
1988 song "Cult of Personality", *or* the sketch comedy
show that helped launch the careers of the Wayans brothers
and Jim Carrey, just to name a few.

* B. Sports

B1. What is the popular nickname of the 37'2" high wall in left
field at Fenway Park?

B2. Name the man who served as Member of Parliament for York West
from 1962 to 1965, during which time he also won two Stanley
Cups while playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 2017
he was named one of the 100 greatest NHL players in history.

* C. History

C1. He was the prince of Orange from birth, his father having
died the week before, in 1650. He ruled as the King of
England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1689 until his death
in 1702. Who was he? Name and number, please.

C2. Abraham Lincoln used their agents to conduct espionage
against the Confederacy, and for his personal security
during the Civil War. They were once the largest private
law-enforcement organization in the world. What is this
organization?

* D. Geography

D1. What is the longest river with a color in its
English-language name?

D2. What is the largest sea by area with a color in its
English-language name?

* E. Science

E1. Name the IBM supercomputer that defeated Garry Kasparov
in a 6-game chess match in 1997, becoming the first
artificial intelligence to win a match against a reigning
world champion of chess.

E2. It is the first modern synthetic pigment, created in the
early 18th century. It was the first stable pigment of
its color to be widely used since the process to create its
Egyptian counterpart was lost. It is on the World Health
Organization's List of Essential Medicines. What is it?

* F. Literature

F1. Name the Arthur Conan Doyle novel that first appeared in
1887 and introduced the world to Sherlock Holmes and
Dr. Watson.

F2. Name the 1895 novel by Stephen Crane about a young private
in the Union Army who flees from the battlefield and, in
his shame, longs for a wound to prove he is no coward.

Saskatoon (SK). 4 for Stephen. 3 for Joshua.

Specifically that'd be the concentration of bridges near downtown.

Medicine Hat. 4 for Dan Tilque and Stephen.

Brantford... and born in Boston".

Calgary (AB). 4 for Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, Joshua, Pete, and Stephen.

Living Color, "In Living Color". 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua (the hard
way), Pete, and Stephen.

> * B. Sports

> B1. What is the popular nickname of the 37'2" high wall in left

The Green Monster. 4 for Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, Joshua, Pete,
and Stephen.

Leonard "Red" Kelly. 4 for Stephen.

Pinkerton (Detective Agency). 4 for Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, Joshua,
and Stephen.

> * D. Geography

> D1. What is the longest river with a color in its
> English-language name?

Yellow River (Huang He). 4 for Erland, Dan Tilque, Dan Blum,
Joshua, and Stephen.

I believe #2 is the White Nile and #3 is the Red River in the
southern US.

> D2. What is the largest sea by area with a color in its
> English-language name?

Red Sea (but see below).

The Black Sea is a very close #2 -- when I realized how close,
I checked a number of online sources. Some put it at less than 1%
smaller than the Red Sea, while some make it a few percent smaller.
But I didn't find any that make it #1. #3 is the Yellow Sea.

*However*, if considering that "coral" can name a color as well as
a type of living thing, we I suppose we must accept the Coral Sea
as a legitimate answer, and it's larger than all of the above.

So, 4 for Stephen as well as 3 for Pete.

> * E. Science

Pete, and Stephen.
