These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2014-03-10,
and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
by members of the Cellar Rats, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. I will reveal the correct
answers in about 3 days.

For further information, including an explanation of the """
notation that may appear in these rounds, see my 2022-09-09
companion posting on "Reposted Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (RQFTCI*)".

* Game 8, Round 7 - Canadiana Arts - Toronto Statues and Monuments

Please see the handout: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/8-7/stat.pdf

There are no decoys in this one. Answer the questions in order
of picture number.

1. Identify the person in this sculpture.

2. Either identify (by name or soubriquet) the TV character depicted,
or name the actor who played him.

3. This person was Toronto's first mayor. Name him.

4. This sculpture (very popular with irreverent seagulls) is of
what person?

5. """Recently deceased""", what internationally famous artist created
this Yorkville sculpture? He also made sculptures in front of
Hart House and in its quadrangle, and at the northeast corner of
King and University. He is best known for creating the statue
for the Canadian film awards now known as the Genie.

6. Which Canadian artist and well-known author created this
monument to the War of 1812 on the Toronto waterfront? He is
also responsible for the big red canoe at Canoe Landing Park,
which can be seen from the Gardiner.

7. Where is this sculpture located? *Either* name the exact street
intersection nearest it, or give either the original or the
current name of the building it sits in front of.

8. Where is this sculpture of King Edward VII located?

9. To what idea is this sculpture at Exhibition Place dedicated?

10. To what idea is this sculpture, located in front of Union
Station, dedicated? It is one of four in the world.

* Game 8, Round 8 - Entertainment - Musicians in Film

1. After the success of "A Hard Day's Night", what was the Beatles'
second movie?

2. "Performance", the directing debut of cult filmmaker Nicolas
Roeg, tells the story of a gangster hiding out in the home of
a reclusive rock star. Who played the rock star?

3. What iconic singer got an Oscar nomination for playing Billie
Holiday in 1972's "Lady Sings the Blues"?

4. Bob Dylan, making his acting debut in Sam Peckinpah's "Pat
Garrett and Billy the Kid", introduced what song that has since
been covered by Eric Clapton, the Grateful Dead and Guns'n'Roses?

5. The acting debut of what musician, pioneer of the "Minneapolis
sound", saw his movie winning a 1984 Oscar for Best Original
Song Score?

6. What rock star made his acting debut in the 1979 Who rock opera
"Quadrophenia"?

7. What respected 1980s musician and activist played the leading
role in Alan Parker's 1981 adaptation of Pink Floyd's "The Wall"?

8. What 1984 movie starring Paul McCartney also marked his
screenwriting debut?

9. What rock star of the 1970s and 80s played Andy Warhol in Julian
Schnabel's 1996 biography "Basquiat"?

10. With his 2002 acting debut, who became the first rap artist
to win an Oscar for Best Song?

Prince. ("Purple Rain".) 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua, and Pete.

This was the last time there *was* an Oscar awarded in this category.
The award was subsequently renamed to Best Original Musical, and has
never been given since then, because it's now only open to movies
with at least 5 original songs that contribute to the storyline,
and there've never been enough in one year to activate the category.

The closest it came was in 2004. The producer/writer/director of one
eligible movie, "Open House", Dan Mirvish, noted that 3 other eligible
movies were being released that year, and if there was one more, the
category would be activated. So he wrote *another* eligible musical,
"Half Empty". As he put it: "We had less than two weeks to shoot an
improvised musical that had enough songs to be eligible, but would
be so horrible it wouldn't draw any votes from our first movie."

The Academy was not amused at this attempt to game the regulations,
and changed them to disallow it. The IMDB shows "Half Empty" as
having been released in 2006.
