These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2023-10-16,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Usual Suspects and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2023-05-24
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
(QFTCI*)".

I wrote one of these rounds.

* Game 4, Round 7 - History - 20th- and 21st-Century Economists and Bankers

1. This American was the 2008 winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics
-- officially that's the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic
Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. He won it for his work
in international trade and the geographic aspects of economic
activity. He is a regular op-ed columnist for the New York
Times on economic and political matters, generally from a
left-wing perspective. Name him.

2. This Canadian, born in 1961, was a long-time economist and
policy director for Unifor, and is now Director of the Centre for
Future Work. He is a frequent media commentator on the economy.

3. This Briton, born in 1883, is widely regarded as one of the
most important economists of the 20th century. His championing
of government stimulus to counteract the effects of recessions
and depressions was highly influential in public policy until
the 1970s, and arguments for and against his positions are
active today.

4. This Canadian led central banks in two countries and is
frequently mentioned as a future candidate and potential leader
of the federal Liberal party.

5. Who is the economist portrayed in the book and movie "A Beautiful
Mind", which chronicled his struggles with mental illness and
later return to productive work?

6. Who is the Austrian, regarded as a kind of godfather of modern
conservative economics and libertarianism, who published his
most famous work, "The Road to Serfdom", in 1944?

7. This American conservative economist, star of the Chicago
School, and author of "Capitalism and Freedom", opposed
<answer 3>'s position, preferring to focus on the role of
consumption in economic activity. He advised various right-wing
politicians such as Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.
Name him.

8. This Canadian started his post-secondary education in agriculture
but switched to economics for graduate work. He taught at
Harvard for decades and worked in the administrations of several
Democratic US presidents, and is the author of "The Affluent
Society", among many other books.

9. Appointed Chair of the US Federal Reserve by Barack Obama in
2014, she was dumped by Donald Trump when her term expired
four years later. She is currently Secretary of the Treasury
in the Biden administration. Name her.

10. When this Italian was president of the European Central Bank,
he was widely credited with saving the Eurozone during the
debt crisis of the 2010s, earning him a nickname derived from
a popular video game. Later he became prime minister of Italy.
Who is he?

* Game 4, Round 8 - Miscellaneous - McCarthy

This round is about people named McCarthy, living or dead.
In every case give their first name. *Answers may repeat*.

1. This member of the acting "brat pack" played Blane in "Pretty
in Pink". Due to a late script change in the ending, he was
called back for additional filming after shaving his head to play
Clay in "Less Than Zero", so he wore a wig for the added scene.

2. This American actor lived 1914-2010 and appeared in numerous
plays and movies, including the lead role in the original 1956
version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". His only Oscar
nomination was for "Death of a Salesman" (1951).

3. This was not a real person, but was the best-known dummy used
by ventriloquist Edgar Bergen.

4. This actress appeared in "Gilmore Girls" and had a lead role on
the series "Mike & Molly". On film, she has Oscar nominations
for "Bridesmaids" (2011) and for "Can You Ever Forgive Me?"
(2018).

5. This woman was a Playboy Playmate of the Year and an actress,
and is now a public advocate for various forms of medical
stupidity.

6. In 1968 this senator from Minnesota ran on an anti-Vietnam-War
platform to be the Democratic candidate for president. He took
several states in the primaries but it was Hubert Humphrey who
got to lose the presidency to Richard Nixon. Anyway, name that
senator from Minnesota.

7. This politician has been a Republican congressman since 2007.
He played a key role in both of the fiscal-brinkmanship crises
this year, resulting in backlash from his own party.

8. The term "McCarthyism" alludes to this politician's favorite Big
Lie -- namely, that the US government was riddled with Communist
inflitrators.

9. This writer's novels include "No Country for Old Men", "Blood
Meridian", and "The Road". He died earlier this year.

10. This computer-science pioneer was a founder of artificial
intelligence and invented memory garbage collection and the
programming language LISP.
