These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-02-12,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Misplaced Modifiers
and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation
of current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2023-05-24
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
(QFTCI*)".

* Game 3, Round 7 - Canadiana Entertainment - Talented Newfoundlanders

This round asks you to identify some Newfoundlanders celebrated
for their achievements in broadcasting and the arts.

1. This Newfoundland band, with 11 Canadian gold albums to their
name, won the East Coast Music Award every year from 1996
to 2000. In 2001 they withdrew their name from competition to
give someone else a chance. Who are they?

2. He called his first hockey game for CBC in 1969 and his final
one in 2019, at age 85. He was the chief voice of "Hockey Night
in Canada" for Leaf games from 1980 to 2008. Also one-time
skip of the Newfoundland curling team. Name him.

3. A doyen of Canadian screen and stage actors with a career
spanning 60 years, acclaimed for his roles in such movies as "The
Rowdyman" and "Away from Her"; he passed away in February 2023.

4. This busy film and TV actor first made his mark as the writer
and star of the CBC series "Republic of Doyle", which aired
from 2010 to 2014. Name him.

5. Author, journalist, broadcaster, military historian, this
Newfoundlander, now resident of England, rose to prominence in
the 1970s as creator of the NFB mini-series "War".

6. Model, TV actress, and star of soft-core erotica. She first
attracted notice as "Playboy"'s Playmate of the Year in 1982, and
has a reality-TV life as the wife of Kiss bassist Gene Simmons.

7. His six novels, including "The River Thieves", "Galore", and
"The Innocents", take their inspiration from Newfoundland's
history and society. They have won or been short-listed for
numerous national and international awards.

8. She was a founder of the comedy sketch group CODCO and a long-
serving member of "This Hour Has 22 Minutes". Probably
best-known for her character Marg Delahunty, a "Warrior Princess"
who roamed the nation, putting the screws to politicians of
all stripes.

9. This comic, another long-time member of "This Hour has 22
Minutes", has enjoyed recent success with a memoir of his
early life that has been adapted into a popular CBC series,
now in its third season. Name him.

10. This painter lived the greater part of his life, from 1963
to his death in 2022, in the hamlet of Salmonier, Newfoundland,
turning out haunting realist Atlantic Ocean scapes and paintings
of disused buildings. He also created the flag of Newfoundland
and Labrador. Name him.

* Game 3, Round 8 - Literature - Foreign Language Lit

Great books come in all languages. We give you three titles
in English, and you tell us the language all three books were
originally written in. Answers do not repeat.

1. "Z"; "The Last Temptation of Christ"; "Axion Esti".
2. "The Art of War"; "Red Sorghum"; "Journey to the West".
3. "My Brilliant Friend"; "The Leopard"; "The Periodic Table".
