These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-02-26,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Misplaced Modifiers
and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation
of current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2023-05-24
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
(QFTCI*)".

* Game 4, Round 7 - Canadiana Geography - Ontario Islands

1. Gordon Lightfoot sang about Christian Island. In what bay is
it located?

2. In 1837, William Lyon Mackenzie captured Navy Island and
proclaimed the Republic of Canada there. In what river would
you find this island?

3. Olympic, an island only 1.2 km long, is in which lake?

4. The second-largest island in Lake Huron is located near Sault
Ste. Marie. For which saint is this island named?

5. Name the largest island in Lake Erie. Hint: it has a winery
named after it.

6. What is the world's largest island in fresh water?

7. Georgina, an Ojibway reserve, is the largest island in which
lake?

8. The largest of the Thousand Islands is home to an extensive
wind farm. Name the island.

9. Please decode the rot13 only after you have finihsed with
the previous question. Guvf Ynxr Bagnevb vfynaq, 20 xz ybat,

10. Middle Island, 18.5 hectares, belongs to Parks Canada and is
home to double-crested cormorants. In what lake would you
find it?

* Game 4, Round 8 - Science - Grade 6 Science

The 4 strands of Grade 6 science in Ontario schools are Space,
Electricity, Flight, and Biodiversity. Here are a variety of
questions from those topics.

1. What do the members of the phylum Chordata all have in common?

2. It has been 17 days since the new moon that brought in the year
of the dragon. What is today's moon phase? (Two words
required.)

3. Traditional Christmas-tree lights are on a circuit that does
not light up if one the bulbs is burnt out. Most lighting in
homes doesn't have this problem. What kind of circuit is used
for it?

4. In our solar system, which planet has the longest day?

5. What profession do Jeremy Hansen, David Saint-Jacques, Joshua
Kutryk, and Jennifer Sidey-Gibbons have in common?

6. In the 1880s, there was a "war of currents" about whether AC
or DC should be used. This involved Thomas Edison on the DC
side, and who else?

7. In Ontario, what do the plants dog-strangling vine, garlic
mustard, and tree of heaven have in common?

8. What scientist's principle explains the reason for the different
air pressure above and below a curved wing that allows for lift
to take place?

9. Last month Japan's SLIM landed within its 100 m target range.
What unfortunately happened to the lander?

10. What do you call the hinged flight control surface, usually
forming part of the trailing edge of the wing of a plane,
and used in pairs to control roll?

Ailerons. 4 for Joshua.

The left and right ailerons operate in opposite directions.
Both flaps operate in the same direction and their function is
to increase lift at low speeds.

Anyone else think the question was about Christmas tree lights and not
lighting for houses? I wasn't sure which one and chose the wrong one.

This is not a challenge, but more of a general comment on the writing of
this question.

I think I had to read the question twice to get it. I was not sure
what they were looking for. I recall that I was thinking "parallel",
but that seemed to trivial. I still considered to put it in, but
apparently I forgot about it.
