These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated, and should be interpreted accordingly. If any answers
have changed due to newer news, you are still expected to give
the answers that were correct on that date.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Misplaced Modifiers
and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation
of current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2023-05-24
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
(QFTCI*)".

* Game 9 (2024-04-01), Round 1 - Current Events

1. This week the Junos were held in Halifax. What Toronto quartet
won both Group of the Year and Rock Album of the Year?

2. What popular musical opened on Thursday at the Princess of
Wales Theatre?

3. Four school boards launched lawsuits adding up to $4,500,000,000
against the social media companies Tiktok, Snapchat, and Meta.
Two of them were the Toronto public and Catholic boards.
Name either one of the other two.

4. A 4-term senator, who was Al Gore's vice-presidential candidate
in the 2000 election, died this week at 82. Name him.

5. Also dying this week, at 87, was an actor who won an Academy
Award for "An Officer and a Gentleman" and an Emmy for "Roots".
Name him.

6. The Blue Jays had their opening day Thursday, winning 8-2 over
the Tampa Bay Rays. Who was the Jays' starting pitcher?

7. An amendment was passed at Queen's Park on Tuesday that will
allow MPPs to address the speaker, not only in French and
English, but also in what other languages?

8. What Toronto attraction was closed to the public this week due
to a strike by hundreds of members of OPSEU Local 535?

9. Ontario's latest budget came out this week. Where will a new
medical school with a focus on family medicine be created?

10. Last Sunday, ahead of the upcoming summer Olympics, Paris
revived a tradition for the first time in 10 years. What kind
of race was held?

* Final (2024-04-08), Round 1 - Current Events

1. What former Raptor is to be inducted into the Basketball Hall
of Fame this year?

2. The Blue Jays suffered their 8th franchise no-hitter last Monday,
at the hands of what Texas Rangers pitcher?

3. Pope Francis last week continued a venerable tradition of
Maundy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter, by washing the
feet of 12 individuals -- in this case, prisoners from Rome's
Rebibbia penitentiary. But the Pope broke from tradition in
one important respect. What was unprecedented about the 12
individuals chosen for the ritual this year?

4. After the German Green Party proposed restricting the import of
hunting trophies of endangered species, the President of Botswana
protested that his country is overpopulated by a certain animal
and offered -- or threatened -- to export 20,000 of this beast
to Germany. What animal is Botswana allegedly overrun with?

5. In Quebec, a group of franchisees for this Canadian company
have filed a lawsuit against the brand's owner, claiming that
the constraints of their licensing agreements, including setting
prices for menu items, have made it impossible to run their
locations profitably. What is the company?

6. The Ford Motor Co. announced last year that they planned to
start production on electric vehicles at a factory in Ontario
in 2025. But this week they've pushed that start date to 2027,
leading to layoffs. Where is that factory? Name the city
or town.

7. Last week, Kieran Moore, Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of
Health, called for decriminalization of certain drugs for
personal use, provision of safer supplies of those drugs --
and changing the drinking age to what?

8. The Toronto Public Library, Warby Parker, Toytown, and other
stores saw huge line-ups on Easter Monday. What were they
giving out for free?

9. Martin Short will have a new role well outside the entertainment
field, succeeding actor/comedian Jane Lynch. For the next two
years, what will he be doing in the town of Funner, California?

10. Within days of release, Beyonce's new album had the most
first-day streams of any country album by a female artist in
Amazon Music history. Name the album.

The Current Events game for the eeason is over, and STEPHEN PERRY
has won it despite playing only two of the five question-sets.
Congratulations, I think!

QFTCI Current Events will return with QFTCISG24 sometime next month,
after Game 2 of the coming season.
