To really appreciate the shades of meaning and the differences among the terms -- especially when used in direct address to an Army officer at a military-draft medical-fitness exam -- you must read in the original Nobel-Prize-winning German a book called The Confessions of Felix Krull. After teaching myself German in high school, I did read that classic of world literature in my senior year at Blanchet High School in Seattle WA USA. We had to write book-reports for our English class, and I felt that I was cheating a little by reading the book in German and then writing a report on "The Confessions of Felix Krull, Confidence Man." But my English teacher, Mr. Maury Sheridan, called me up after class one day and complained to me that I had written a report on a worthless, trashy novel. I was afraid to tell him that I had read the book in German, not English. I did not have the presence of mind to say, "Whom should I listen to, Mr. Sheridan? You, or the Nobel Prize Committee, who awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature to the author of this book?" I did not think of sending Mr. Sheridan down the hall to talk to the German teacher, Marilyn Rey, who used to enthuse in class about the medical-exam scene where Felix Krull uses all the German words for "doctor" and "medic" and so forth to plead for the examining doctor to let Felix Krull be drafted into the Army of the Kaiser. When your German is good enough, you can read that scene in Felix Krull until the tears and the belly-aching laughter start flowing and you have to put the book down to regain control of your senses.

I'll put that on my reading list. English translation, though. My
German's too slow these days.
