Greetings, Broughton descendants,

Does anyone have information on this Edward Broughton? An Edward Broughton was "secretary of the council" for Jamaica 1737, married widow Sarah Weatherly at St Helena's Parish SC (Beaufort area) in 1740. It appears Sarah had Weatherly children from the St Helena's Parish register, and she was probably the widow of Thomas Weatherly.

I have an Edward Broughton born about 1745, lived in Sumter Dist SC 1773-p1800, maybe died AL c1817. Probable son Nathaniel (went to AL), probable daughter Jemima (m1 Cannon m2 Runnels, went to AL), definite sons John H (went to GA) and Edward (remained in SC).

Many online trees show Edward's (b 1745) father as Nathaniel (m. Marie Ravenel, dau of Daniel Ravenel) who died c1778 SC Charleston area, but there's no documentation. Over the decades, some have tried to "force" this relationship by giving Edward the middle name "Nathaniel," without documentation.

I have an open mind about this and hope for clues. I don't need to force a relationship back to Lt Gov Thomas Broughton (d. 1737 in office SC), and would like to set the record straight. Anyone with documented info about Edward who married Sarah Weatherly and the Edward who lived in Sumter Co SC would be greatly appreciated.

SC is so hard to find records, with all the Parish, District and County changes over the early years...
