In fact this group is useless now. There is only spam and its very hard to find
real messages.
Is there a possibility to make a new group elsewhere, without these idiot spam?

There is no point in creating a new group. As Todd told me via email, this group already suffers from a lack of a critical mass because of decline in user participation over the years.

Report the spam, and eventually the current lot will go away.

Google Groups has barely taken action against the spam for over a month.
As Todd told me via email, the group has suffered with low volume for a long time.

Maybe it's time to fight back. Some of the recent stuff is for ebooks,
presumably rip-offs. I looked at several and they seem to be
self-published. However where they're books from large publishing
houses it might be worth reporting them to the publishers.

I've just started doing this but as I've deleted the headers from
previous spam I can't go back to older stuff. Maybe someone who's still
got the links can pick this up.

I don't know it it was reporting that did the job but the earlier
spammers who didn't grasp the difference between medieval and medical
seem to have been despatched.

i dont think theyr selling anything, they just want to attack google through a
soft target. Most groups arnt getting any spam now, so i'm not sure why its
still getting through to this 1.

Whatever - an aggrieved publisher or two leaning on Google, or
preferably the ISP for whoever's spewing this, is more likely to have an
effect than complaints from the likes of you and I.

I don't post much but I do/did read...what is a "critical mass"? A couple hundred have looked at these posts...why not a new group?

I'm a member of the East Riding of Yorkshire Genealogy Group (https://groups.io/g/East-Riding-Yorkshire-gen) hosted by https://groups.io. I'm also the owner / administrator of a private group hosted by the same company (https://groups.io/g/Annaba-Veterans). The latter is mainly for posting anecdotes and photos for which we have 1GB free of charge, above that it's payable.

A lot of the information on soc.genealogy.medieval is invaluable, and I'd personally be prepared to contribute to the costs of a spam-free group. However, I'm not IT savvy enough to administer it, but perhaps someone with the relevant skills is willing to look into the possibility?
