I like your theory. I have been struggling with the ancestors of Peter Woolley b. 1767 Duchess Co. died in Hanover, Chautauqua, NY. What sources do you have for it?

My Peter Wooley is related to Nehemiah Woolley of Duchess most closely since he has a son named the same. Do you know how the forenames Tilton and Nehemiah fit into the Woolley's?

Thanks!

This is what is known as an Avunculate marriage (aunt marrying a nephew & uncle marrying a niece) which was legal at the time in New Jersey. Children of Edward and Lydia were:

I believe that Peter Woolley (born 24 March 1732; died unknown date to me), who married Hannah Potter (12 Feb. 1730 to 6 Sept. 1769) and who lived in Dutchess County, was a brother to Lydia Valeriah Woolley (1737 to 1813) who married Zephaniah Howard and to Pontius Woolley (1739 to 1814) who married Content Palmer. Peter and Hannah had a son named Pontius Woolley who was born on 27 Feb. 1763. Peter, Lydia Valeriah, and Pontius were the children (according to my reckoning) of Edward Woolley and his wife Lydia "Lida" Stelle.

Lydia Stelle (born 1709; died after 1739) was a daughter of Gabriel Stelle (1685 to 1738) and his wife Elizabeth Woolley (1685 to 1723). The parents of Elizabeth Woolley were Edward Woolley (1655 to 1729) and Lydia Allen (1660 to 1732).

As you can see, this is the source of the Christian name PONTIUS which was passed down amongst the Howard and Woolley descendants,
