Apologies for the new posting. No ‘reply all’ feature is showing up at the bottom of the earlier Hexstall posting to which this is an addemdum.

When first posting, I had not yet seen a document in the National Archives [E 40/9138] in which William Hextall, cousin and next heir of Isabel de Hopton, late of Ludlow, quitclaimed to Thomas Gryme of Seete in Shropshire a tenement in the town of Ludlow. The quitclaim is dated 9 December 39 Henry VI [1460].

I have now seen the document and it adds little to the catalogue description. The relevant Latin is: “Will[el]mus Hextall....me p[re]fat[um] Will[elmu]m consang[ui]neu[m] et p[ro]x[imum] heredem Isabell de Hopton nup[er] de Ludlowe....”

The Discovery catalogue translates ‘consanguinem’ as ‘cousin’ which is perfectly correct given earlier breadth of the term ‘cousin’.

It looks as though Isabel or the Hexstall family must have held the Ludlow tenement in her/its own right. Were it part of the Hopton estates, presumably William would have had no interest in the tenement to quitclaim.

As I have posted above, Isabel might have been the daughter and heir of William’s father’s younger brother Thomas. Nothing has emerged so far to confirm this.

Nor have I been able to find anything much about the Hopton family into which Isabel married.
The blog https://walterfitzgilbertdehamilton.wordpress.com/ offers some speculation about the Hopton family and its Hexstall connection but scant documentation.
