It never occurred to me to try something like this. Looks really workable.

I've done something like that to make replacement bearings for the
carriage of my Craftsman radial arm saw.

Cute, but when faced with a need for a dowel and only oversize sticks available,
I've done the deed with a swiss army knife... no jig required, and only the
hole in the furniture for measure. Doesn't even require a work table.

The traditional bodger trick, with a two-point spin support lathe and
a rope around the work, also has miraculous ease-of-operation using only
muscle power. A drill press with a rotating free-end support on the table allows
lathe-like operation, freehanding with a chisel... or a file. I've done that, too.
