Hello. I just checked the DICOM standard 2022d part 3 for the MR Image IOD specification of Bits Allocated. The specialization in C.8.3.1.1.4 reads "Enumerated Values: 16".

My understanding of "Enumerated Value" is that this specifies the list of possible values for the attribute. So, if my reading is correct, an MR Image may only have 16 bits allocated.

Am I understanding correctly?
If not, ignore what follows.

I keep coming across images with 8 bits allocated. A couple of randomly-chosen viewers honoured this and displayed the image correctly. Is this common enough that one should expect it to be supported?

If so, will 8 added to the list of Enumerated Values in the standard?

BitsAllocated=8 is permitted for the "Enhanced MR Image IOD" and the "Legacy Converted Enhanced MR Image IOD".

It probably won't ever be added to the old "MR Image IOD", and one should not expect viewers to support it, although many do.

For clinical DICOMs, I haven't come across images belonging to the MR Image IOD that have BitsAllocated=8.
I've only encountered them in test data sets, or as images that research groups have generated.
