Until we're on top of this unwelcome spam problem, I suggest changing the group to a closed access one for now.

Who is a moderator or admin that can action this?

I would be happy to try and help. I don't want to see this invaluable group die.

You are seeing the spam on Google Groups because Google does not seem to filter anything on the groups. Google is also the source of the spam.

comp.protocols.dicom is a Usenet newsgroups, so shared around the internet as such. See here:

https://www.novabbs.com/devel/thread.php?group=comp.protocols.dicom

Usenet server administrators are working hard to filter the spam on Usenet that is originating from Google Groups. The best way to access groups is either a web interface (as linked above), or better yet, a real Usenet news reader (Thuderbird is an example of a newsreader). Then, select a free Usenet server provider such as www.eternal-september.org or www.i2pn2.org (which both do quite good filtering of spam, and share their knowledge).

It doesn't appear that Google cares so much about Google Groups anymore. They seem to place no attention on it, or they wouldn't have let it become a haven and source of tens of thousands of spam posts per day.

I decided to post this because I see so many users in groups in Usenet that use Google Groups, that are not aware of any other way to access their favorite group in a way where it is actually useful. I don't want to see Usenet die at the hands of Google.

Thanks for the pointer - good advice. I wouldn't be one bit surprised to find out that Google Groups is being dropped imminently.

I'm not a mod/admin but today I noticed that we can all flag the messages as spam in the Google Groups web UI if you go to groups.google.com and navigate to this group. You can do this in bulk by using the select all at the top of the list of emails, and then clicking the "Report Abuse" icon near the top right side. Maybe this will help initiate more action on Google's side of things. I've not had this problem with any of the other Google Groups I'm on so I'm hoping this can be resolved with proper action from our members.
