If you mean the kind of privacy discussed here, it's important for about
0.05% of the population. Specifically, InfoSec is a niche subject
requiring moderate IT ability but even that is beyond the ken of
most people.

But everybody has some security expectations. In simple terms
how do I know this computer and this program is working for
me rather than someone else when oodles of programs, libraries
and hardware is made by people I don't know.

Even business IT departments tend to focus on any (often
pointless) piece of work they can present as something to
do with security rather than tackle actual security problems
they have.
