Haven't tried it. Doesn't it require Tor for any anonymity?

It does, but it was not ment to be a fully anonymous network in the first place.Rather a fully decentralized, torrent like web service, where as long as a single peer hosts your content,it is available.
Looks pretty dead tho,it's unfortunate as I liked the atmosphere and feeling of it.In the golden days,on it's main reddit like forum Zerotalk, many smart people were around, and I could get a lot of my unethical questions answered, let it be any topic :D
Was nice, but life goes on I quess.

Not him. I can only speak for myself.

1. It has the same limitations as Freenet (static only) with hacks to get dynamic content working.
2. No I2P integration at all and Tor support felt more like an afterthought (Bittorrent over Tor??).
3. It should have been anonymous first with the option to disable anonymity, not the other way around.
4. Namecoin. Why crypto coins? Something like I2P's address book system is almost always preferable.
5. Updates to static sites seemed like it took forever to propagate, even without Tor. This was a major road block for many projects I had in mind at the time, which required frequent updating.
6. This might have been the biggest issue but there was practically no content on there. There was nothing that made me want to keep using it.
7. I don't know if I am misremembering or not, but once you added a lot of ZeroNet sites it kept getting slower and slower.

About point 2., at the time it was heavily discussed that browsing in ZeroNet is far worse for your anonymity than browsing on the clearnet, as everyone in the world can know what you're browsing vs just your ISP, Google and any website hosts. Many users weren't quite aware of the privacy implications at the time and IPFS has the same problem.

Overall it's an interesting project and I did host some ZeroNet websites and did try to develop projects using it but it never led anywhere really.
