I noticed that the rslight engine truncates leading spaces in the first
line of messages in the message body display.

In the HTML element: "<div class="np_article_body"><p>" The leading
spaces are truncated after the first "<p>" tag. Thus since the space
aren't there, the CSS "whitespace: pre-wrap" shifts the first line of
each message body to the left according to the number of leading spaces
in the original article text.

You can see the offset in this example post, on the first line of the
body:

https://rocksolid.sybershock.com/rocksolid/article-flat.php?id=6&group=alt.sources.crypto#6

More examples are evident at these links:

https://rocksolid.sybershock.com/rocksolid/article-flat.php?id=20&group=alt.sources.crypto#20

I get "Page not found" at all these links.

But the article I'm replying to displays, and I'm not seeing any missing characters. Maybe you're working on it right now?

Sorry about that. I killed the server for a few minutes while poking
around. It is up and running now. I checked the links and they are
currently working. I won't touch anything on this end. Knock on wood.

They work now :)

I see what you mean. I just added that group to my test site so I can take
a look at what's going on.

There's a lot of code in rslight now, and I don't always remember what I
was thinking when I wrote some of it, or how it works right away. I need
to read it and then remember.

Try this. I've attached message.inc.php in a .zip. It goes in $webdir/rocksolid/.lib

If it doesn't attach, I'll send it another way.

I mean $webdir/rocksolid/lib (no dot) as message.inc.php

Great! I'll add it in a commit.

So, I need to add the above change, add some notes about pcntl_fork(), make remote server/port stuff more clear in config (port num vs just a 1), and create the nocem dirs during first run.

I'll work on that this week.

Thanks for the troubleshooting and feedback. It helps!

No sweat. Over the next month of Sundays I will be researching other
options for the daemon and how to add them to the installer in a way
that will not confuse the end user. Best scenario is for installer to
check it silently and only alert the user if no option is available,
such as if php.ini has pcntl_fork, pcntl_signal, pcntl_waitpid and
such disabled. In the most extreme case, fallback could be a bash
nohup wrapper around nntp.php functions, connected to a init or systemd
daemon that restarts 30 seconds after failure and logs restart
timestamps to a file.

For instance on my most recent server pcntl is built in to php but
disabled by default. The way it is configured, pcntl errors are FATAL
errors with mandatory exit with no warning or error output. There is no
obvious way to catch them or do exception handling. I do not know why
php does it that way. It sure did have me wondering a bit.

For the time being, I have added an error message to cron.log:
Dec 11 12:33:29 ERROR: pcntl_fork() disabled in php ini file, cannot fork (nntp server will not start).

Now that we can check that in php, we can act on it with more than just an error message,
