Do the 2 have to be defensive midfielders? Or can they just be normal midfielders, with 3 attacking midfielders?

And do the 3 all have to be attacking midfielders?

And is it the case that in all formations with more than 3 numbers, the 2 or 3 numbers in the middle refer to midfielders? And why do they do that, when there 's a clearer difference between a sweeper and a normal defender and a team that plays a sweeper is never referred to as playing 1-3-4-2 or whatever?

Generally speaking in that formation, both stay deeper, but one has more defensive responsibilities while the other is more a starting point for attacking build-up. Classic examples are Gattuso-Pirlo and Mascherano-Alonso in the 00s. Present day example: Kimmich-Goretza.

Typically one is the attacking mid (i.e. the #10) and the other 2 are wingers who have defensive responsibilities as well, especially when the opposing fullbacks go forward.

Sweepers is an outdated concept. Can't think of a single pure sweeper in the present day.
