derserving than Haaland, especially given the latter's uninspiring

Haaland is an amazing goal scorer. But is he even the best player for
Man City ? A case could be made for Rodri, De Bruyne or even Bruno Dias

But you are right that world cups are given far too much weight for this
type of award. I always felt Zidane getting it in 1998 was a complete
farce, and seemed based on two uncharacteristic headed goals in the
final itself, when he had been pretty undistinguished in the rest of the
tournament - including getting sent off and missing a match through
suspension. Juve actually improved when Zidane left and was replaced by
Nedved.

I am still sore from 2019 when Messi beat out Van Dijk on basis of just a La Liga title, when VVD had won the UCL and missed out on the EPL title by 1 point. Even disregarding the EPL, surely UCL beats La Liga? And VVD was the most dominant defender in the world at that time by some distance. I know defensive player hadn't won it since 2006, but VVD's case was as strong as ever.
