If would also be a good time to subscribe to eternal-september's
"test" newsgroup (eternal-september.test) as I assume it is one of
the twelve groups that you can see.

So see if you can post a test message to that group, just saying
'test' will suffice... so that you, and me, can see that your
newsreader is set-up and working properly. You will also be able to
get the hang of composing and sending messages with your newsreader.
We can then go back and forth there if tweaks need to be made, but if
you are logged-in correctly, authenticated and using the right server
ports, XanaNews should work fine at its default settings.

So test away... it is what test groups are for after all...

Under dial up and connection, SSL required wasn't ticked, so I've ticked that box. That's the only box that wasn't ticked that seems likely to have made a difference. I've copied and pasted the user ID and password from the e-mail. I'm still only getting 12 newsgroups. I don't know what else to try.

I've done that now; I can't work out how to actually see the newsgroup and post a message there.

Just filter/search for rec.sport.soccer then subscribe.

newsgroups that you are interested in using the search box that's
there with the list of groups and click "Get messages" on the
toolbar... your subscribed newsgroups will be in the far left pane of
the main screen. Right clicking on an individual newsgroup will give

I can't find any recent messages. I left it on the default Get all messages, and it gave me literally hundreds of thousands of messages dating back to about 2009, and it would have taken hours to scroll down to find the recent ones. But when I try get messages dating back to Feb 2 2024 or whenever, it says "Get article list for news.eternal-september...." in the bottom left corner under Queued requests, and lower down it says "About to get article", and it just remains stuck like that.

Get Messages: will get you all of the messages on the server...

Get New messages: will get you all of the new messages on the server,
since you last got messages.

Get last [Box] and change the number from 300 to whatever, will get
you the last xxx message on the server. So if you entered 100 in the
box you'd only get the last 100 messages on RSS from the server

If you have the whole RSS archive from 2009, and want to keep it,
then change the sorting settings. (Tools -> Options -> Sorting and
Threading ) and change the setting there from descending to
ascending, or vice versa.

You can view posts by thread, or individually by date.
(chronologically) By date will have the latest messages on top, or at
the very bottom, depending on your preference.

Or on the main screen in the pane that is displaying the messages,
you can also click on the date, once or twice, which will change how
the messages are displayed. Click away and try... it's your
newsreader, mess around with it.

I just tried clicking on Get all new messages; also tried get only new messages; and there's no messages since Feb 7. There's new messages since then on google groups.

It didn't work. Where it says "Display messages" I've tried threaded and tried chronological. And I've tried ticking "Group posts using subjects". And I still have to click on each message individually to read them.

Yes, you have to click on the message in the top pane to view the
contents of the message in the bottom pane...

Your newsreader should be set up by default...

Left pane (Vertical): list of subscribed newsgroups.

Right side, top pane (Horizontal): Downloaded message(s) from the
selected newsgroup(s).

Right side bottom pane (Horizontal): Message contents, included
quoted text.

Those panes can be resized to suit your needs by clicking and
dragging. So a bigger bottom pane will give you more visibility for
the message content.

To go to new messages, clicking N will take you straight to the next
unread message.

Whilst clicking on the SPACE BAR will take you straight to the
bottom of the selected message, below all of the quoted parts.

Pressing n is taking me backwards to older messages. I don't know what's going on there!

Is there no way of getting all the messages in a thread to appear in the bottom pane together, like you can see them all together on nova BBS or google groups?

It won't be about new or old as such, if they are unread.

I don't know how they appear on Google Groups, I have never used
it... and never been inclined to want to!!!

You are now trying out a newsreader. The message pane is for reading
the message. The list of the messages pane is for seeing the
messages, who they are from, the subject, and what time they were
sent. They are two separate panes. Your thread is in the top pane,
the selected message you have clicked on appears in the bottom pane,
for you to then type a reply if you choose too.

If you prefer a web forum, then maybe you should use BBS after
February 22nd. A newsreader does take a bit of getting used to when
you are coming from a web interface. Mess around with the settings
and send messages to .test newsgroups if you have to, just to see
how they display (etc.) You can change your fonts, colours, size,
headings, and loads of other things via TOOLS -> OPTIONS ... so once
you get the hang of the basics you can customise your newsreader to
suit yourself. Practice. It's free!

I've helped start you off with XanaNews as it's simple and it's what
I use. As we wouldn't want to see you cut-off from RSS after
February 22nd. But once you get the hang of XanaNews you can move on
to any newsreader... Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Forte Agent, trn,
Microplanet Gravity (etc.) as they all work in a similar way, some
with added bells and whistles.

It's as if the people working on Groups don't actually use it, and
have no idea what it's for. They certainly don't do any testing.

I'm reminded of when they removed the reply/post buttons from the

Axiomatics, Google’s decision is about money. The Usenet form of Google Groups was a huge waste of resources. Humongous storage space with NO advertising. Obviously, Google had a right to claim a balanced cost-revenue sheet. So, they had no choice but stop the service.

Google, however, has another option: the forum-type of groups. The format is FAR SUPERIOR to Usenet (the primitive form of human connectivity in the digital era). The service is still FREE — with a kicker. The group owners can display Google ads! Both sides benefit, Google especially.

There are more and more forum-type google Groups nowadays. There will be a ton more in the near future. I started one. It looks great and has great features. I abandoned it because I had a gigantic website. I’m less and less involved in the Internet stuff now.

Nobody 'needs' to move off! People can stay on Google Groups and use
Google's own groups if they don't require access to Usenet. That's
their choice.

I can't search the body of messages with Thunderbird, can I? (I only see
options for searching 'Subject' and 'From').

Any other possibilities to explicitly find posts made after February 22,

Does novaBBS have a search function? I think I'd try that if I were you.

The RSSSF Archive's link to rss takes you to google groups (unless it's

NNTP XPAT extension command can search, by pattern, any header over a
range of message-ids (in a given server). Thunderbird probably limits
that to those two (useful) headers.

To search the bodies one needs to retrieve them from the server, index
them for search (locally), then keep updating the index with new
articles. A big task, that Google did for all the newsgroups it
carried. No idea if NovaBBS does it or just searched Google.

posted by Binder Dundat on "Sun, 30 Mar 2014 19:51:42 -0400".

Most recent, as of this post is index 241524, also posted by
futebolmetrix on "241535 Sun, 25 Feb 2024 16:27:55 +0000".

However, not all indices between first and last may exist, as it
estimates to only have about 90573 articles available.

I think JLA and Narkive just have a Google search button.
NovaBBS looks more useful, but infuriatingly you can't sort by date,
and it doesn't go very far into the past (which is fine, at the moment
Google Groups still works for that).
