I saw the race (ESPN - US)and they had a slow motion video of what appeared to be a smallish (smaller than the wheel) disc that might have been the spyder in the hub departing the scene with the wheel leaving the image out of frame. Was the hit such that the spyder was destroyed to the point it separated for the wheel rim and tire assembly? Thanks, Pat

The outer bead broke off the rim allowing the tyre to slip of the rest of the rim.

By 'bead' above I mean the whole outer 'lip' of the rim.

You can see it here:
<https://www.westmeathindependent.ie/2023/10/08/lewis-hamilton-and-george-russell-vent-anger-on-radio-after-collision-in-qatar/>

I see a lot of media reporting it as the 'wheel' came off. It's a pet peeve of mine that, at least
according to my experience, American media (and people) often use 'wheel' when they mean tyre and
vice-versa. I've had a few heated discussions with Americans in motorsport fora on the subject and
they usually end up with them saying 'same difference' (which it obviously isn't).

Hi, it's me again (the central scrutinizer <g>).

That link's to an Irish website and I see that even they say that the 'wheel' came off!

The disc that you describe in the video was likely the new FIA 'hubcap' thing that they have to
stop teams from pushing air out through the wheel for aero effect.
