This wasn't a banner year for newcomers. I'll give the nod to Logan Sargent for simply completing the full season with Williams. I'll be curious to see if he shows any improvement in '24.

Three drivers made their in-race debuts in 2023. Lawson and Sargeant
had each previously appeared F1 in practice sessions; Piastri had not,
although he had had 1-day tests with Alpine and McLaren. If any of the
three was a "rookie" it was Piastri; I'd count all three, with Piastri
obviously RotY.

I agree with Piastri for RotY but wouldn't say he was the 'most rookie' as he had far more
seat-time than the other two (albeit in a year-old car). F1 practice sessions are an hour at most.
Piastri had most of the day, several times, to get to grips with a recent F1 car.

I knew Piastri had got a lot of F1 seat time but I checked Wikipedia to see what was said there. It
seems he got more than I'd thought. I remember Alpine saying they'd spent millions (Three?) flying
a car and team around the world to give his as much relevant experience as possible. In fact
'thousands of kilometers" was mentioned after the split with Alpine.

"Piastri joined the Renault Sport Academy in January 2020. After winning the FIA Formula 3
Championship in 2020, he took part in his first Formula One test in October with the Renault F1
Team, driving the Renault R.S.18 at Bahrain International Circuit alongside fellow academy drivers
Christian Lundgaard and Zhou Guanyu. He remained part of the now-rebranded Alpine Academy in 2021
and drove the Alpine A521 in the post-season young drivers' test at Yas Marina Circuit in December.

After his Formula 2 title victory, Piastri was appointed as Alpine F1 Team's reserve driver for the
2022 season. He was also made available as a reserve driver for McLaren following an agreement
between the two teams. He took part in Alpine's testing sessions in the A521 (2021 car) throughout
the season, including at the Circuit of the Americas, Losail International Circuit and Silverstone
Circuit. McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl later confirmed that Piastri had a private two day
testing session in a previous-spec McLaren car at Circuit Paul Ricard the week before the São Paulo
Grand Prix."

So it seems that, as well as two young drivers test days previous to 2022 he got at least three
multi-day private test sessions with Alpine in 2022 as well as a two-day session with McLaren the
same year. That has to make him one of the best-prepared F1 rookies of all time. He spent all of
2022 getting ready for 2023, not only with seat time in two recent cars but also hundreds of hours
in the simulators.
