It's going to be hard not to notice that tonight starts a matchup of MLB's highest 2023 payroll (Mets, $346M) vs the 3rd lowest (Rays, $74M). The Mets are 20-22, while the Rays are 31-11, the best record in MLB. Not only that, but there's also the Baltimore Orioles at 26-15 with the 2nd lowest payroll at $66M.

This all could change - the season still has a along way to go. And the Mets could continue limping through the regular season, just barely make the post season, and then catch fire and win it all. You never know. But it's hard to see that happening right now. It's not just the starting pitching. They are 24th of 30 teams in ERA, but they are also just 23rd of 30 teams in runs scored. That's not going to do it. After having mostly a great regular season last year, they faded towards the end, and then in the post season. And that fade is continuing so far this year.

It's hard not to like Steve Cohen. He really does want to win, and it shows.. But his "spend big to win now" effort may have already peaked last year. They have to focus more on turning over this roster with younger players. Baty and Alavarez are a good start. And clearly, any trades they make should focus mostly on getting some young pitching into the organization. Easier said than done, of course.
