Steve Cohen has cheapened the honor of having one's number retired.
Seaver, Koosman, and Hernandez I agreed with 100%. Piazza I had my
reservations because he only had a couple of good years with the Mets;
his best years were with the Dodgers. Still, I could understand Cohen's
thinking on this one. Gooden and Strawberry? Give me a break! Two drug
addicts who probably cost the team further championships. Both
ultimately signed with the Yankees. Let them retire their numbers.

Yeah, this was a weird one...plus, then what? Have to do Carter at some point? I think he belongs in the same group as Straw, Doc and Keith if this is the direction they're going. Then how many years later 'til Wright? They should leave all of these guys for the Mets HOF....retired numbers should be reserved for Baseball HOF members.

I don't believe that FWIW and I give nobody Doc's number. He probably
put up the single greatest season in my lifetime and you can't
understate what kind of superstar Gooden was. He was the most exciting
player I ever saw, no exceptions.

I have to place a young Nolan Ryan in that category. I was too young to appreciate Koufax.
