Who do you want to be HC and who do you think Spanos will hire?

I want Harbaugh because I believe he provides the fastest turn around. He turned around the Niners with the same failed roster of the year before. Nobody would blame Spanos for taking that big swing so it's also his safest bet.

He will instead hire the next up and comer coordinator and will keep us in purgatory for the next 3-4 years. Wash, rinse repeat.

Agreed on both counts - I want Harbaugh, but they'll probably hire a cheap coordinator again.

Was doing a little research tonight and realized 8 of the last 10 Super Bowls have been won by teams whose head coach was on their second or third head coaching job - three by Bill Belichick, two by Andy Reid (who the Chargers could have hired instead of Mike McCoy a decade ago), and one each by Bruce Arians, Gary Kubiak, and Pete Carroll. The previous 15 years had 8 second time head coaches win - Belichick's first three titles, two by Tom Coughlin, and one each by Dick Vermeil, Jon Gruden, and Tony Dungy.

That's pretty interesting.

I imagine that Harbaugh is the runaway choice by Charger fans. But, even
if the Chargers are willing to pay him, he still has to be interested in
leaving Michigan.

Isn't he facing a multi-game suspension in college? Maybe joining a team with a young Herbert will convince him. I see it as the Spanos safest choice. If he fails, no one will criticize them for a big swing and miss. If they choose a coordinator and fail, everyone will criticize them. A Herbert/Harbaugh duo would put butts in seats for sure and maybe finally show everyone the Chargers are serious about winning.

That's a great way of looking at it.

On the suspension, it ran through the last game of the season, so it's
been served:

Apparently that isn't the end of it. According to the Bleacher Report:
"Despite accepting the Big Ten's three-game suspension for the alleged sign-stealing scheme, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh could still be subject to additional discipline from the NCAA.

Appearing on Big Noon Kickoff, Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports and The Athletic said Harbaugh "could be suspended for the bulk of the 2024 season" when the NCAA wraps up its investigation into the sign-stealing situation and alleged recruiting violations from a COVID-19 dead period in 2020."

The 3 game suspension was the Big Ten's, he's still facing NCAA suspension.

That's pretty important. May change the equation.

He has a lot of interest in returning to the NFL. Apparently, he was convinced that he had a deal with the Vikings last offseason before the owners overruled the GM and decided to go with Kevin O'Connell instead: https://www.si.com/nfl/vikings/news/what-happened-vikings-jim-harbaugh-michigan-interview-difference-perception

Afterwards, Harbaugh stated it would be the last time he pursued an NFL job, but of course that is likely posturing to make it seem like he plans to be at Michigan forever. If Michigan wins the national title this year, that would be the perfect note for him to go out on and he wouldn't have to deal with any NCAA fallout from the sign stealing scandal (much like Pete Carroll left USC for the Seahawks before the NCAA hammer over the Reggie Bush scandal came down). He's also clearly interested in working with Herbert - ESPN's Mike Greenberg told a story on-air recently of seeing Harbaugh at a funeral for a mutual friend and Harbaugh spending several minutes at the reception afterwards raving about Herbert's talent: https://twitter.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1731732599091913088

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/michigans-jim-harbaugh-weighing-125-million-contract-extension-offer-that-carries-no-nfl-clause-per-report/

"The university is presenting Harbaugh a contract extension that would
make him the highest-paid coach in college football but would preclude
him from pursuing an NFL job for the 2024 season, according to NFL
Network.

While the clause limiting NFL interest would only last one season, it's
apparently been enough to prevent the two sides from reaching an
agreement. The Wolverines' contract proposal is for 10 years and $125
million, which would eclipse Dabo Swinney's $115 million contract for
the biggest in college football history."

It sounds as if Harbaugh is really serious about moving to the NFL this
year. My guess is that he will if Michigan wins the upcoming college
football invitational tournament.
