Are they really trying to become cap-compliant by extending and
restructuring contracts, so they can then try to trade him and others of
the big four contracts?

The deadline is Wednesday the 13th.

I guess they are assessing trade interest in the various players before
making any final decisions:

Dianna Russini @DMRussini

The Chargers are open to trade offers for many veteran players including
Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, per sources. There are teams interested but
many around the league are willing to wait to see if the Chargers cut
them soon.

Albert Breer AlbertBreer

The Chargers have had exploratory trade talks on OLBs Joey Bosa and
Khalil Mack (as @DMRussini said), and WRs Mike Williams and Keenan
Allen. Allen appears to be least likely to be moved, but they're
listening on all of them.

It all, of course, relates to their cap situation.

The $20,833,333 dead money charge for J.C. Jackson is really hurting the
Chargers. Without that, they'd be just $300K in the red in terms of the cap.

What a terrible deal that turned out to be. From shut-down corner to $0M
dead money charge.

The dead money is irrelevant.

The real mistake was guaranteeing $40M to someone Belichick moved on
from. When has that ever been a good move?
