Chargers trading WR Keenan Allen to Bears for fourth-round pick: Sources

The Los Angeles Chargers are trading wide receiver Keenan Allen to the
Chicago Bears for a fourth-round draft pick, league sources confirmed
Thursday.

The trade comes after the Chargers approached Allen about a pay cut and
he refused, a league source said.

Allen earned his sixth Pro Bowl selection last season and tallied 108
catches for 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns.

I do not get this at all. Obviously they're taking WR at 5 now, but even
so - they will have a WR room that combined for fewer NFL catches,
yards, and TDs than Allen accounted for himself last year despite
missing 4 games.

I am just devastated by this. It feels like the new regime has come in
and taken apart this team. Right now the Chargers are less than half a
legitimate NFL team yet they have little means to fill all those holes.
Rookies are rarely ready to make a big impact immediately, and the
Chargers still don't have a ton of cap space. Popper estimates they have
$38M available now, but that is reduced to $22M once allowance is made
for draft picks and in-season reserve. And who is available to spend
that $22M on? Wasn't the plan to trade down from 5 to obtain additional
picks? How can they afford to do that now, since they have to take one
of the top WRs? So Herbert will be throwing to Palmer, QJ and the new
guy? I'd be all in favor of bringing back Williams at a reduced contract.

I've been a Chargers fan since 1968, but right now my fandom feels like
it's hanging in the balance.

Staley ruined the team with his pay lots later for middling perfomance
now approach. It was always going to be a tear down.

Is Harbaugh a fan of tight ends? Generally speaking, they fit better
with smash mouth football than slot receivers. They are certainly cheaper.

Same, I get that Hortiz and Harbaugh are trying to clean up the mess
left by Telesco and Staley, but this still is aggravating, especially
since they only got a 4th rounder back. Looks like the plan is to
acquire cheap veterans to fill in some depth and hope to hit on some
skill position players in the draft.
