Can't say I was a big fan but we always listened to a few of his
songs when we went on fishing trips to Canada. One of his songs
was about the sinking of the "Edmund Fitzgerald" in Lake Superior
in 1975, where 29 men died. Well there was a small church up there that
held a service for the dead sailors and they rang the chapel bell
29 times. When Gordon Lightfoot died they rang the bell 30 times.

The church is in Detroit next door to GM HQ. I’ve been there. I mean the
song lyric says it’s in Detroit.
