I always get amused when people get outraged by teams and athletes at the
elite level getting caught cheating. Everybody is trying to get an edge on their
competition and nobody is above bending the rules to get that edge. Baseball
pitchers doctor the ball. Hitters cork their bats. Yet everybody goes bonkers
because the Astros got caught stealing signs, as if that was anything new.
The 1951 Giants used a similar sign stealing scheme to make their dramatic
comeback to win the pennant after being 13 1/2 games behind the Dodgers
in August. Football players on both offense and defense try to get away with
as much holding as they can. Officials only decide how much is too much
when calling holding penalties. Receivers, especially near the goal line, will
run pick plays to get a teammate open for an easy touchdown. Why are some
forms of cheating acceptable and others are not.
