It's worse when the bots ride shotgun:

<https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/articles/its-official-cars-are-the-worst-product-category-we-have-ever-reviewed-for-privacy/>

..... unless you don't mind sharing your "sexual activity"(or
absence of) with thousands of "trusted partners".

It's so bad Teslas won't run if you turn off surveillance.

That said, and more on topic.

Something makes a "ping" every time my back wheel goes round.
Not so when I dismount and spin the wheel. I've tapped all the spokes,
none appear loose.
Any ideas?

Flex spokes in pairs with your hands. Do the spoke crosses
click when flexed? Did you find broken spoke? Those two are
the most the likely to fit your description.

I have a Garmin cadence sensor on the crank. It is the Type 2 held onto with the rubber holder. It is a little high on the crank and every rotation of the crank it makes a squeaking as my shoe rubs up against the rubber.

That would time to crank rpm, not wheel rotation.

They all do. Rather, they make a grinding sound. They all have a
slight layer of corrosion. I've never lubed my spokes, didn't think it
was necessary...

No broken spokes. Wheels are true, no wobbles.

Thanks. I'll get a friend to listen for me. Maybe she'll hear
something I didn't.

The sound comes from the back wheel, not the crank. It's once
every turn. Thought it might be something catching on the brake rotor,
but sound disappears when I dismount, and rotor is not warped, and
there's nothing near the rotor other than the caliper.
It's a stress thing. I'm heavy (> 100kg) though not
overweight...

You can place a drop of oil at the crossings and test ride
to confirm that's the source of noise.

If so, there's no simple cure. Low spoke tension allows
more wheel flex/spoke deformation and the crosses abrade
with a notch where they touch. Next time you rebuild, use a
tensiometer to rim manufacturer's spec.

It seems likelt to be a spoke issue. They tighten and relax as they
rotate wirh weight on the wheel.

OK, I put a small drop of SAE 140 oil on each crossing. Thick
so it doesn't run all over the place. Bar heavy rains, I'll be doing
my 10km tomorrow morning. I'll report back.

If I can find a mechanic that has one. I live in the interior
of Brazil. I get everything bike-related through the mail. No local
bike shops.

I have no experience but others here have noted a web based
program to translate the audio frequency of a plucked spoke
to a wire tension value.

I use pedal spacers. I guess that's why I don't have that problem.

Well, there's this:
https://sheldonbrown.com/spoke-pitch.html

And if you have a smartphone, it's easy to install a "tuner" app that
will give you the frequency of a tone.

So, pretty sure it's the spokes.

That's probably where I read about tapping the spokes with a
screwdriver and listening to the sound. Back in the day when I had a
single speed 28" wheel bike and did all the maintenance myself,
Sheldon's site was a must-read. Can hardly believe he's been dead for
over 16 years.

I'll get someone to listen for me. The sound is certainly
"duller" than on my old bike, but the spokes are much thicker, and
probably shorter.

PS I'd rather use a recorder and analyze the frequency on my
PC with something like Audacity. I hate smartphones.

I don't doubt this for a moment but I know we've all
seen some pretty iffy cyclist behaviour in cities (or
lotsa places, for that matter).

It could very well be the decision making software
just can't react quickly enought to darting cyclists.

I don't know the particulars of the case, just
bloviating about it in general.

I wonder how the law will end up adjudicating cases
like this when a machine is one of the drivers?

(We need our Seattle lawyer guy posting again...I
forget his name, though.)

Criminal liability is a great question.

The usual civil liability is on the registered owner, not
the driver. No driver, no problem.

Yep. As I mentioned, a guy here was riding facing traffic at night with
no headlight, just recently.

I saw that a lot when I lived in the city, especially a wide
one-way on my route home. I found that a dead straight cold
stare, while shifting to a higher gear with elbows locked,
will encourage the bastards to swerve into traffic.
