Speaking as a cyclist, I'd say the bongs and text function
on telephones are more of a problem.

Once long ago the SOBs mostly stayed in their own lane.

If we get rid of bike lanes in door zones, there will be fewer of those
particular accidents.

From the article, it wasn't clear to me whether the rider was in a bike
lane or not. But there are many bike lanes painted in door zones, and
the number continues to grow. It's part of the philosophy that "Any bike
facility is a good bike facility."

The magnitude of the "dooring" danger is often unrecognized, in part
because the accident reporting forms cause analysts to usually omit
doorings. Why? Because they are not considered "a collision between
vehicles in transport." I know people that have worked mightily to
change that recording glitch, but have not yet succeeded.

But information has come out in recent years that in large cities,
doorings can be about one quarter of all car-bike crashes. That's a huge
proportion. And as the incident above shows, they can be fatal.

Somewhere I read that the most common cause of auto "accidents" was
inattention by the driver.

Given that some studies have shown that a large percent of bike
accidents are actually caused by the Cyclist I wonder if the same
problem exists there. The rather recent mention of the Garman
(spelling?) things on bikes.
