It isn't photochemical smog, but rather bush-fire smoke from deliberately lit hazard reduction burns. Still not great for the lungs, but not smog.

Water vapour is the major greenhouse gas, but it freezes out of the atmosphere as you go higher, so it's effective radiating altitude is relatively low.

CO2 doesn't freeze out at all, Neither do methane and nitrous oxide. Hydrofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons and ozone have a effect but there isn't much of any of them.

Last year we had a record amount of rain, so the local vegetation did well, and there wasn't a lot of opportunity for fuel reduction burns. We'll need quite a few more.

The "heat wave" - such as it was - has gone away, so they may be able to get in a few more before it gets too hot and dry to be safe to do it.

When they do controlled burns in proximity to urban centers in U.S., the foresters are required by law to look at the wind forecast so as to prevent shrouding population centers with haze like that. Just a thought.

Just what the people who have to fight the real fires need - lots of inexpert advice from people who don't have to carry the can when real bush-fires devastate urban areas.

Lawyers love giving everybody a say. They tend to ignore the point that most people who want to have a say don't know what they are talking about, and tend to be most vociferous when they know least.
