My irfanview is installed using the defaults but is there a way to have
Irvanview export an ini file of the current settings such that I can save
and later import that back into any wiped out newer version of Irfanview?

The need to wipe out the existing Irfanview to load the latest Irfanview
occurred today when I tried to use the screenshot capture hotkey that I've
been using since I was a little boy, well, for as long as I can remember.

Did the latest Windows update take over the Control + LEFTARROW hotkey?

Irfanview was set up with "Options -> Capture/Screenshot" set up like this.

Capture area = Foreground window
Save captured image as file
File name = screenshot_$U(%Y%m%d_%H%M%S)_###
Destination folder = C:\TEMP\capture
Save as = Windows Bitmap BMP
Capture method = Hot Key = Ctrl + Left

And then, whenever I wanted to kick it off, I'd open Irfanview & press "C"
to initiate the hotkey. But today, suddenly, with no warning, I get an
error of "IrfanView Error: Can't register hotkey!"

The Irfanview hotkey choice was because one hand can hit both keys.
And those keys are conveniently next to each other on my keyboard.
And, as far as I knew, nothing else was using that hotkey.
(But Ctrl+Up & Ctrl+Down are already used by default as shown in the
Irfanview "Help -> Keyboard Shortcuts" menu report.)

Until now?

Did the latest Windows update steal my favorite Irfanview 4.59 hotkey?
I can change the hotkey to "Ctrl + Down" or "Ctrl + Up" & even "Ctrl +
Right" but, for the first time ever, not "Ctrl + Left".

When I place the cursor in this editing window, all four keys move the
cursor left, right, up and down so it's not the key itself not working.

Any ideas?

If I need to, I will uninstall and re-install since there are later
versions than 4.59 (https://www.irfanview.com/checkversion.php?ver=4.59)
but my hotkeys and settings are honed over the years so I have to first
write them down - unless - maybe there is an ini file?

I remember when I install Irfanview it asks about that - but I haven't
installed it in years (as it doesn't need updating).

I guess I just realized maybe another question (so I'll add another group
specifically for Irfanview freeware) is how to save all the settings after
the fact (for example, I've changed some of the more common menu hotkeys by
right clicking on them and changing them - for example I've made the
hotkeys for "Auto-Crop Borders", "Auto-Adjust Colors", "Resize" and "Save"
all start with the same control key so that I don't have to keep switching
my fingers between pressing different prefix keys of "Shift" or "Ctrl" or
no control key (since I use those actions in sequence most often together).

I also have, over the years, honed the settings such as zoom management (to
select corners to crop) of "Enable Zoom Magnifier" and other customizations
(especially in zoom step management but also in file & window handling).

These are the files in the irfanview installation directory
#readme_zip_users.txt
8BF_Filters.ini

My Irfanview is installed using the defaults but is there a way to have
Irvanview export an ini file of the current settings that I can import that
back into a newer version of Irfanview?

Have you checked the list of Shortcuts to see what shortcuts are
available in the version your version of Irfanview?

Help - "Shortcut Keyboard Shortcut Keys"

There are many, or I would scroll through the list for you.

i_view64.ini
It's in the IrfanView folder, if you do a manual 'install' from the
zip archive.

https://www.irfanview.com/download_sites.htm
scoll down, or
https://www.irfanview.info/files/iview462.zip

(Please reply in alt.comp.freeware only.)

It's Arlen forging again because he's fucked in the head.

That's possible, of course, but I didn't think so.

There's nothing to export. The ini file is in one of two locations,
which you determine at install time.

The one I know about (since I selected it at install time) is
%APPATA%\IrfanView\i_view32.ini.
I _think_ the other one is in C:\Program Files (x86)\IrfanView, but
I'm not certain.

It's Arlen. The poster being forged posts through ES.
That forged post is through mixmin. Arlen uses servers
that require no registration to forge and he has done it
many times. IIRC, he's forged you too.

Thanks to the information from Stan Brown I saved off the irfanview ini
file (i_view64.ini) and ran Revo Uninstaller to wipe everything out.

Then after re-installing Irfanview I copied the ini file back and
everything is back to normal now. Something must have grabbed the hotkey.

The reason for Ctrl+Left was that one hand can hit it but I noticed while
checking to answer your question that "Control + Arrow" is a default hotkey
for resizing selection boxes (which I never do with the control keys) or
for skipping 5% to the left when watching videos inside of Irfanview.

I didn't know that until I looked for you but I don't use Irfanviwe to
watch videos (I use MPC/BE instead) and I move selection boxes by mouse.

But thanks for bringing it up as there aren't many control keys that
Irfanview hasn't already taken already (which I guess is a good thing).

It's all fixed now. Thanks.

The space bar is equivalent Right arrow. (This is a big problem when
we are sailing.)

Most probably. Those posts are through paganini, another
server that requires no registration. I can't think of
any reason that he habitually does this, other than he's
bonkers.

I guess you must have 64-bit Irfanview. I didn't know
that a 64-bit version existed.

There's usually no reason to update Irfanview since it doesn't change much.

But I hadn't even thought about the bitness - so I looked it up for you
since you took your time to help me - I'll help back if I can help you.

Starting with IrfanView 4.40 there is also a 64-bit version available.
https://www.irfanview.com/64bit.htm

Advantages of IrfanView 64-bit over 32-bit version:
It can load VERY large files/images (image RAM size over 1.3 GB)
Faster for very large images (25+ Megapixels, loading or image operations)
Runs 'only' on a 64-bit Windows (Vista, Win7, Win8, Win10, Win11)

Advantages of IrfanView 32-bit over 64-bit version:
Runs on a 32-bit and 64-bit Windows
Loads all files/images for normal needs (max. RAM size is about 1.3 GB)
Needs less disc space
All PlugIns will work: not all PlugIns are ported (yet) to 64-bit

Notes:
You can install both versions on the same system
just use different folders

There is one other advantage of using the 32bit version of Irfanview.
There is an OCR add-on by KADMOS that is only available for the 32 bit
version. If you have to do any OCR work this is the deal breaker for me.

The 64-bit version is handy if you open very large images.

There seem to be a couple large formats. Microsoft ICE makes Photoshop .psb for output.

magick convert test.psb S:\test.tiff64

Irfanview has trouble with the test.psb, because a field in
the metadata is malformed, but a cleanup with Imagemagick fixes that.

[Picture]

https://i.postimg.cc/tJhJpJLN/Irfanview-big-image-handling.gif

What impresses me, is Irfanview loading an image file at 2 GB/sec.
Not all the image operations are that fast. But some of them are.

Imagemagick has this command:

magick identify -verbose test.psb

which dumps detailed metadata, and that's where I spotted one
line full of junk characters, and that is why the test.psb wasn't
loading properly.

Thanks, Philip. I never need to edit images that large, so I think
I'll stick with 32-bit.

FWIW, I went to <https://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm>
and downloaded the 64-bit version 4.62. (I canceled the install.) The
installer wanted to install in C:\Program Files, not C:\Program Files
(x86). So if people want to install both versions for some reason, it
looks like the placement in different folders should happen
automatically.

Yes. I noticed that when I looked for the ini file. I happened to have two
installations (by accident?) on my system, one in each program files
folder.

I guess the 32-bit version of Irfanview is the one to use because it
supports more plugins according to what "knuttle" reported earlier.

Wouldn't the 32-bit version of Irvanview be faster because the web site
says that the code base is smaller than it is for the 64-bit Irfanview?

Of course, if the file you're opening is huge, then you need 64-bit.
But otherwise, wouldn't the 32-bit Irfanview be the better (faster) choice?

I haven't benchmarked them, but most people seem to
feel that either version is pretty fast. If you don't
need to edit gigabyte-sized pictures, I'd go with the
32-bit version and plugin compatibility.

Agree that the whole point of Irfanview is speed and that both are fast.

In fact, I didn't even know I had the 64-bit version until I looked for the
ini file you asked me to find - and only then did I realize I had both.

Somehow the shortcut reverted to the newer one as I generally don't update
Irfanview in years unless there's a reason to update it.

Has anyone here ever /needed/ to update IV to get something new in it?
