Does anybody know anything about the Canon Raw file format .cr2 ?

I have an aged Photoshop Elements (version 6.0) which claims that it
can open .cr2 files, but its not interested in the raw files from my EOS 80D

Has the file format been altered in some way since it was introduced ?

Do I need to get an upgraded PSE ?

Elements won't open files from cameras that are too new.

Download Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4 (DPP4) (free) for your
camera. It will open the files. Then use it to edit your photos, or
use it to make digital negative (DNG) files which Elements should be
able to open.

Thanks for the response - I will give the DPP a try.

Although ... upon further investigation, it seems like my much older
EOS 50D has exactly the same problem with PSE

I guess I will soon find out what you mean by "cameras that are too new"

You could use the free Adobe DNG converter tool to change those to DNG.
Opportunity to auto-rename per whatever your preference is too. Once in
DNG, PSE should handle it. (No guarantee mind you).

Possibly - but that presents other issues, I believe.

DPP is regularly updated. I don't think it outputs DNG, but does
TIFF, JPG and HEIC

It also does just about all I need to do and has developed features in
the 10+ years I've used it (450D, now 700D).

It has the advantage of doing any conversion with the defaults set in
camera as a starting point. Some on photographic forums prefer DPP's
colour rendition to 3rd party converters.

I'd assume the format has to change somewhat with camera model but I
don't know.
