"prolific and popular mid-century [English] novelist" (d.1961)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Thirkell

The language connection amounts to a passage from _O These Men, These
Men_ (1935), in which characters talk about the emotional effect of
hearing the names of persons once known.

Tenuous!

I had never heard of the woman, I wonder how well-known she is these days.

I'd certainly heard of her (in part as the mother of Colin McInnes),
but I haven't read any of her stuff (Colin McInnes's either, for that
matter).
