A leading English philologist of his day. Founded the Early English Text
Society (1864) to make OE and ME manuscript works more accessible to the
modern scholar.

He was the second Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary. The
first, Herbert Coleridge, died of tuberculosis (age 30), after only a
couple of years' work. Furnivall served from 1861-1870. "Despite his
scholarship and enthusiasm, his stint as editor of the OED nearly ended
the project. For a dictionary maker he had an unfortunate lack of
patience, discipline and accuracy." (Wiki)
James Murray succeeded him, and finally made the thing happen.

Furnivall was also an enthusiast for sculling (rowing). There are some
nice photographs of him with the young ladies he coached at the
Hammersmith Sculling Club (now Furnivall Sculling Club).
