I can't figure out how to add rec.aviation.soaring to Thunderbird.

What is its "server name" and port?

Did you look at "http://www.eternal-september.org/" ? Free newsreader server.

eternal-september.org can be accessed via the following server names and ports::

Client Settings
Server name: news.eternal-september.org <<<<< server name
Port : 119 (NNTP)
Port : 563 (encrypted connection NNTPS) <<< works for me

Me, too, and for Connection Security I needed STARTTLS from the
pull-down. My default port is 587.
