Immediately contact your SSA Region 8 director to find out what the SSA knows about the situation, and what they plan to do about it. Next step, have an AOPA member in your club contact the AOPA with the same questions.

I see West Palm Beach is currently Class C airspace. Is a change to Class B part of what the FAA is intending?

Make that "Region 5", not Region 8!

Myself and the SSA Region 11 Director were on the "FAA Class B Redesign" for KLAS many years ago. I'm sure SSA could provide some insight. The FAA wanted to extend the KLAS Class B out to 40nm, well beyond the normal 30nm Mode C Veil. Thankfully we were able to hold them to 23nm around the ILS Rwy 1 approach corridor. This turned into a 2 1/2 to 3 yr process before it received final approval and publication.

Is there a local State, County or Airport Dept of Aviation that is showing the proposed change? Please post the link.

Bill

Thanks, I could not find anything online. There was some stuff that started 3 yrs ago, so perhaps this is the final? Also some stuff about changing chart references for a name change to KPBI. But I found nothing about extending the airspace as to the west.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Palm Beach International Air Traffic Control Tower has submitted a proposed modification of PBI Class C Airspace. You are formally invited to attend the initial ad hoc committee meeting regarding the proposed airspace change. The meeting will be held on December 7, 2023, from 4 – 6:30 pm, at the Palm Beach International Airport Administrative Offices, Building 846 - Main Conference Room. Additional information, including directions to the meeting and a graphic of the proposed airspace modification are attached. If you are unable to attend in person, but would like to participate virtually, there will be opportunity to join via Zoom.Per FAA Order 7400.2P, Chapter 14-2-3(b), the FAA has requested the Palm Beach County Department of Airports to coordinate the formation of the ad hoc committee. The sole intent of the committee is to give users the opportunity to provide input to the FAA regarding the proposed airspace modification. At the ad hoc committee meeting, you can expect the following from FAA representatives:
A review of the FAA’s requirements for modifying Class C Airspace,
A review of the FAA’s policy for establishing ad hoc committees and the intended purpose of ad hoc committees, and
A briefing of the proposed airspace modification, and why an airspace change is needed.
Once the initial FAA briefing is complete, the FAA’s role on the committee will be limited to the role of technical advisor or subject matter expert only. The FAA is not a voting member of the group and is not responsible for the operation of the committee or the development of recommendations. For your consideration, it is expected that at the initial meeting, the committee will elect a chairperson(s) to lead the committee’s efforts through completion of their work. Once completed, the chairperson(s) will ensure that a written report is prepared summarizing the committee’s efforts and documenting its recommendations for FAA consideration.
If you, or your designee, plan to participate, please RSVP by emailing RSVP@pbia.org by November 30, 2023. Please note in the RSVP if you will attend in-person or virtually. A Zoom meeting invite will be sent to those that choose to attend virtually. Thank you in advance for your anticipated participation. Please free to share this invitation with others that may be interested in the proposed airspace changes.
Thank you,
Michael Giambrone
Director of Airports Planning
Palm Beach County Department of Airports
846 Palm Beach International Airport

Did anyone else catch the irony?! This meeting is on Pearl Harbor day!

Seems not like the meeting OBTP and R are attending.

I was surprised my comments to the MIA B expansion were incorporated into the design. Make considered comments with loving speech and supporting flight traces...

Thanks Paul

Everyone should make sure that the SSA is represented on the committee and a representative from each local soaring club that could be impacted.
It would be great of a graphic of the proposed change was available before 7 Dec. Note that the FAA Tower wants a change, but they ask the Airport Commission to run the "ad hoc" committee and they are the "Technical Advisors".. AOPA should also be involved.

Bill

Exactly Right Bill;
OBTP sent me a picture of the proposed change. It really is major for his operation and "R" at Willis.
He and "R" will attend the meeting.
I will send the picture to SSA Government Liaison Committee, but for now local input is most important.

Hartley Falbaum
SSA Director Region 5

> > > If you, or your designee, plan to participate, please RSVP by emailing RS...@pbia.org by November 30, 2023. Please note in the RSVP if you will attend in-person or virtually. A Zoom meeting invite will be sent to those that choose to attend virtually. Thank you in advance for your anticipated participation. Please free to share this invitation with others that may be interested in the proposed airspace changes.

Bob, what are you talking about? Speaking up and offering alternatives to the design is being part of the process/solution...

The FAA Tower asked for the redesign of the airspace. The FAA obviously must have a reason, increased traffic volume, reported near misses etc. to request the airspace change. They cannot run the committee to review the proposal. The local airport authority is tasked to reach out to the users or "stakeholders" and run the review. The local airport authority also has to reach out to the local community for environmental impact and conduct various meetings with the communities around the airport.
