The bird expended fuel (energy) during its flight, and probably indulged
in mid-air refuelling from any insects it encountered on the way.

How is that Purist?

According to Wikipedia: "They undertake the longest non-stop migrations of any bird, and
to fuel they carry the greatest fat loads of any migratory bird so far studied, reducing
the size of their digestive organs to do so."

It is amazing what this bird can do. It flew 11 day without so many things we'd use for
the same flight: a copilot, night vision goggles, GPS, autopilot, inReach/Spot, weather
forecasts, constant communication with ground crew, coordinated inflight refueling...

I do wonder what the Godwit success rate is. Can it do this flight and the return 5
years in row without ever "landing out", in which case it'd be flying as conservatively as
Old Bob? And what is their backup plan if the winds or other problems make it impossible
to complete the journey? Maybe they just turn west to reach the Americas.

When did you see a sailplane flap its wings (except on a heavy landing)?

Anyway, the bird is a Self=Launcher!

Bob, I think flapping wings qualify as a motor glider or, at a minimum,
a self launch sailplane.

That should be "turn east" for the Pacific Godwits, or maybe Hawaii and Guam are the
favored alternates.
